Ryan Seacrest Goes on Today

LOS ANGELES — As the gap between pop culture and the culture writ large seems to narrow with each passing day, the possible ascendancy of Ryan Seacrest to a plum network news assignment marks another notable watershed. Can a purveyor of Top 40 radio and the next singing sensation (not to mention another round of Coke) on "American Idol" command the television stage in a national crisis?

That's just one of the questions making the rounds inside NBC headquarters at Rockefeller Center in New York, where executives are said to be discussing whether to make Seacrest the next host of the "Today" show. The talks have been kept under tight wraps but NBC Broadcasting Chairman Ted Harbert has made it clear that he thinks the versatile Seacrest is capable of making the switch to what was once known as a news show, sources said.

"There is a huge inner-office battle going on right now about what the 'Today' show is going to be next," said one executive, who is closely familiar with the program but asked not to be identified while discussing internal machinations at NBC. "There is still an old guard who remember when the show set the news agenda, before 24/7 news. NBC News was the thing."

"Today" has long been more than a news program, shifting like other morning shows to a melange of features and entertainment amid a convivial "family" of on-set personalities. That mix is viewed as key to luring, and holding, a mostly female audience.

i remember he was mentioned for possible Larry King replacement but then they got the horrible Piers Morgan.

i think Costas who is known for sports reporting probably would do better with other important news coverage. does he want to stick to just sports or they don't want to give him the job or what ?

either way today show sucks and i am only surprised it is still on air.

a couple years ago.
The kahunas told Costas that he would be covering some star's death and he said "NO!" and told them to get someone else.

Costas used to be pretty good on the news and he doesn't like frivolity.

What skill does he have? Making chit chat with nobodies? Is there anyone on the planet who couldn't do his job? Is there anyone who isn't better looking? Is he not the biggest joke alive?

anyone on said show is immediately assumed to have TALENT (not that they are just lucky fucks who were in the right place at the right time) and they are treated like friggin' ROYALTY

I remember the beginning of the Today Show in my youth in the 1950's with Dave Garoway the first host. Today at that time was the model for everything that came after in the morning. It launched a new frontier in television with substantive and important news and information. Our entire media has sunken to the pablum dumbs the public even more. Its more than about the morning shows.

I say we reopen our football stadiums and reinstate real gladiator games and televise them. We can have our new media talk personality and dating habits while gladiators pummel each other on the real field of battle. Then we will be like the Romans. Then again the public might like it.

I wouldn't watch the Today show anymore if they made him a host.
