Most of us have at least one family member, friend, or co-worker in our lives that really disappointed us when we learned they voted for Trump.
Mine is a niece.
Not racist. Not a bigot. Just someone who always wants lower taxes and always votes Repub.
Anyway, we dont discuss politics.
I learned from her Facebook page that she voted for Trump.
Im hoping that the Mueller report will make her sorry she voted for him.
Would love to hear some stories from people on who they really want to hear an Im sorry or I was wrong for voting for Trump from.
Also, tell me if youve already heard this from someone in your life.

(1,474 posts)most Nixon voters were too ashamed to admit they voted for him. I guess some who have bragged about voting for trump might have to admit or atone. People I know that like him still have their heads so far up his ass that I doubt they will ever admit their blunder.

(13,186 posts)That I know of. If I find out, they aren't in my life anymore - as much as I can make that happen
I wish one coworker would at least STFU, but I don't expect an apology from his Trump ass

(16,402 posts)Except for my own grown kids and a couple of cousins, they're all Republican plus one hard-core Libertarian. I communicate mainly with one, the only one who doesn't start spouting RW talking points almost right after "hello." They are all convinced they're in the right and Trump, though "perhaps" flawed, is doing what needs to be done. Fox News says so, after all.
If any one of them ever admitted their vote was a mistake, I'd drop into a dead faint. There's no way an apology will ever happen. They never apologize for anything. Having moved cross-country makes them easier to deal with and I'll be forever grateful that I raised my kids far from their influence.

(14,249 posts)But I have plenty of friends and acquaintances who did.
I used to try not to mention it - friendship thicker than water and all that.
Then I realized my silence was part of the problem. These people voted for, not only to undermine everything I care about but to undermine ME, as an African American woman. They dont get to do that and then get a pass. They needed to hear from me and take direct and uncomfortable heat for their decision - which I provide them at every opportunity.
A few have changed their minds, admitted they made a terrible mistake and apologized. Some just look embarrassed and sheepish but dont try to defend themselves anymore. Very few try to justify themselves anymore because they know I will drop kick them through the window - they have the good sense to keep their damned mouths shut.

(63,201 posts)then they can shove their apologies up their collective ass.
Absent such a vow, even the most allegedly regretful Trump voter will certainly vote for the next Republican asshole to land on the ballot.

(58,785 posts)from which political leanings spring. Personality is genetically wired.
They simple can't make that promise, and they will always be a big part of "us." Some could vote for decent people take over the Republican Party. Or move to another conservative party if one forms.
That said, like you, I see no indication that well over half of current Republicans will not continue to loyally support their current leaders. They seem far from any limits to what they will accept, and it seems likely that for at least half of those there never will be any.
Those'll still be hissing "Hillareee" and "BO" from their wheelchairs and walkers long after their families learn to never mention politics in front of them.
Which to me makes it important to differentiate. My husband's Jewish. Although I try to be as reasonable and persuasive as I can manage, these days I seem to be mostly just an intolerant (fed-up!) liberal instead. In gross terms, there are two very noticeable types of conservatives around this intensely conservative deep south county: Those who will be friends with us and those who are hostile and won't. Huge difference between the two, even if all probably voted for Trump.

(47,399 posts)Not a single soul. There is no one in my life that voted for Trump. An ex in-law was a Trump supporter and he became an ex Facebook friend. He will remain an ex friend.

(63,902 posts)certainly nobody in my family...
my husband works the polls on election days. I'd be interested in knowing how many votes Trump got in my ultra liberal section of an ultra liberal New Haven...
We know who the Dems are when we have Dem primaries but of course not in the General.

(3,784 posts)I don't even really know who he is anymore, and I can tell you that I've lost a TON of respect for him. When I first met him, he was fiercely independent, claimed to be a Libertarian who was all about freedom, but was very liberal in a lot of regards. But when Trump burst onto the scene, I remember him telling me he couldn't say exactly why, but he just loved Trump. Later he said he liked him because he thought it was funny when he was rude to the other candidates. He has now abandoned every independent ideal he ever had and is a full-blown member of the Trump Cult. The man can do no wrong in his eyes, and he's changed HIS opinions on issues to better fit in with the Trump policies.
The other day he told me that if the Trump presidency did nothing else, it proved to him conclusively that there is a Deep State controlling everything in this country. So I already know that he'll never apologize. When Trump goes down, it will simply be yet more proof to him that the Deep State was afraid of a Washington Outsider coming in and making changes. It's sad, really, because I once knew him to be an intelligent, deep thinker. But he's checked all of that at the door to become a member of the Trump Cult. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if Trump went on TV and told him to drink poisoned Kool Aid, he would be dead before sundown.

(9,527 posts)He wasn't a friend before for a host of reasons, thought the proper response to the church shooting in South Carolina was to complain about stores not selling confederate flags being a violation of the 1st Amendment and openly said women should always wear high heels among other insipid notions. Fortunately he left our parkour group for more a location more comfortable with his idiocy.

(524 posts)I dont know what happened to him...used to be a Hillary supporting Dem. Only conclusion I can come to is that hes a racist. It hurts me to type that...but, until he apologizes and admits how wrong he was, I just gotta stay away for my own sanity.

(16,334 posts)one who declared to me last week that BCBS wants to come back to the marketplace in Georgia but not have to cover pre-existing conditions. She sounded shocked. And exclaimed how wrong that was and that insurance companies should not be allowed to do that.
It was all I could do to refrain from asking her "HOW STUPID ARE YOU?"

(5,790 posts)There are a handful of friends and family members with whom I'll discuss politics, as well as a whole bunch of complete strangers here.
The vast majority of friends and coworkers and relatives - I just act as if politics does not exist.
There are a few beloved family members that voted for Trump that I'll always have to treat on that basis.
As for the rest - I generally interact only in specific contexts. Work. Sports. etc.

(14,249 posts)but they dont mind having a racist as president of the United States, which isnt much better.
I have a friend who regularly tells people who voted for Trump and still support I dont need you to tell me youre not a racist. But I do want you to look in my black face and tell me you do not mind that the president of the United States is one.

(1,765 posts)You should have seen his face when I first told him I was volunteering for Obama in 2008. He was speechless but not surprised. It makes me literally ill whenever he mentions he is going to Washington for business....
We basically agree to not discuss politics and it usually comes up a few times a year. He also has personal mixed feelings about Ted Cruz.
My mom said she has always been disappointed in how he turned out and how he sold his soul to the devil since when she first married him his idol in life was JFK and Robert Kennedy. She got divorced as soon as she knew there was no hope.
I have hope that some day after he retires he will someday come around.

(1,765 posts)He thinks they are great people and he believes that what they do policy wise is important. He knows how I feel so we don't have a lot of in depth conversations about it haha. (Also since I don't want to get sick to my stomach) But yeah overall he totally drinks the Koch coolaid.
It was pretty funny though when I was in Wichita this summer and my dad who is a black humor type of guy said: So do you want to go see where they burn puppies in the basement?
Me: What?
Him: You know where the evil Koch brothers burn puppies in the basement (that's what the liberals think anyway)...You know do you want to go see the changes to the office?
It was funny and not funny at the same time.

(1,477 posts)One posted on Facebook that God was the reason that tRump was elected. 😳
The other kept posting fake right wing crap. Hes not a stupid guy, so Im sure that he knew the posts were fake. When fact checked, he would get rid of the entire post, but shortly after, put out a different fake post. It went on like that the entire election. I suspect that he was pumping out the fake stuff to reach as many as possible before getting caught with his lies. Of course hes a fundamentalist.
