BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 03/01/18 08:16 AM EST
Former Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said he thinks the survivors of the Florida high school shooting who returned to school Wednesday need a "belief in God and Jesus Christ," noting that he thinks it "would help" and that the survivors need "something more."
During an interview on Fox News, Chaffetz was asked about what it meant for lawmakers to take a pause from their day to reflect and honor the life of the late evangelist Billy Graham. Chaffetz said he was "proud" to see people honoring Graham, adding that Graham impacted millions of lives.
"We need more good news, more good message, more of the good word reaching out to America," Chaffetz said on Fox News.
"I think of those kids who went back to school today after that horrific shooting, and they need something more. They need a belief in God and Jesus Christ. I think that would help. And this is a historic moment."

(3,335 posts)belief in Christ or whatever faith they chose to follow. Second, Chaffetz is a fool if he believes THAT faith should be a substitute for common sense gun control laws in this country. If he disagrees than why does Congress need armed security guards at the entrances to the Capitol Building and their Congressional offices?

(82,849 posts)So, Jason, does that mean we'll soon see some new laws that make sure the hungry are fed, the homeless are housed, and the sick are taken care of? You know, like Jesus said? How about some new laws that defend the widow and the orphan instead of requiring them to work at non-existent jobs to receive benefits? Are you going to be reforming immigration law to be more welcoming to the stranger and the alien?
Faith without works is dead, being alone, Jason. Where are your works, Jason?

(40,208 posts)4 of the kids killed in that school were Jewish. The school has a large Jewish population, I read in one news report as much as 40%. This moron's comments are disrespectful to the victims, their families, and the community. Fuck you Chaffetz.

(4,608 posts)American christians, evangelicals, etc. is that Christianity is the ONLY religion. Certainly the only one that matters. The fact that there might be Jewish, Muslim or other denominations in the student body alludes them entirely. THEIR religion is the only one that matters. Worse, they insist on foisting it on everyone else.

(54,349 posts)So I know he'll never get himself into a position where he'll have to answer this, but I would think most high school students are capable of asking this question of con men like Chaffetz: if praying to God and Jesus Christ would be so effective, how come God and Jesus Christ didn't prevent the killer from doing his mayhem BEFORE he did it. The effectiveness of thoughts and prayers of the not-involved AFTER a disaster has never been shown to be of much comfort to the victims.

(14,530 posts)he is calling this a religiously motivated shooting and condones it. A Christian gunman goes into a school where 40% of the students are Jewish. 25% of the fatalities were Jewish. Then Chaffetz said they need more Jesus in their lives.
I vaguely remember a fart by that name but have no idea why it's foul stench is polluting this fine site. who fucking cares what this smelly little gaseous bubble "thinks"?
