(58,724 posts)Many states require gun safety training and an exam before one can obtain a license to buy a firearm.

(58,724 posts)I think it's important not to lump all the states together and suggest that there is one process by which people can purchase a gun that applies to the entire country (which that inaccurate statement does).
California, for example, has over 10 percent of the population of the United States, and requires a safety course, a written exam, and a ten day waiting period.

(21,786 posts)NB also that among states requiring safety training and an exam is Connecticut; there have been multiple instances of mass shootings in states with those requirements (and most mass shooters are "law-abiding gun owners" until they aren't). I personally find it kind of odd that the NYT doesn't note the general ban on ownership of most handguns and semi-automatic rifles in other countries (you can't own a semi-auto rifle in the UK, for instance; you can obtain a firearms certificate for a rifle, for deer, say, but it'll be bolt-action).
