My theory: Republicans impeach Trump just prior to the midterm elections.

They will take the credit for taking the lunatic out of office which then gives them some cover from Trump's negative coattails. That might be enough to save some of their arses and retain control of both chambers.

Its a troubling thought because it might work.

I think they are going to ride out the next election, at the very least. If it does not turn out well for them, the decision will be out of their hands.

His base would be so incredibly enraged that Republicans impeached him, almost none of them would turn out to vote. It would lead to an absolute slaughter.

Until they don't. When he becomes more of a liability than an asset, they will dump tRump. They need or want him to help pass their legislation. When he stops doing that he is an albatross around their neck and he will be gone. Dat's my take...

Given what he said about guns yesterday, they should have been demanding his impeachment, but somehow all is forgiven of the great orange pile.

The timing of that is critical. If he does it this summer, it just might happen as you suggest.
I don't think they would do it without that report.

And I think that is what will happen. There is going to be so much more negative stuff coming from Mueller investigations and indictments, the Republicans will feel that have to do something or they will get slammed in the elections.

Ryan and McConnell may get all pious and sad, but the base will never buy it. Not after all the effort to paint Mueller as a partisan hack and the investigation as a witch hunt. Fake News!

The phrase "hoist by their own petard" comes to mind.

from the Koch Brothers and others and their ability to control the media narrative through Fox and talk radio to hopefully (from their perspective) try to narrowly hold on to the House and pick up a few seats in the senate.

And, they're also hoping that the economy doesn't go into the tank before November (Thanks Obama!)

Once they decide to dump Trump the Republican machine will kick into gear. Faux news, conservative media, and the Repub billionaires will all be in sync.

They could either back away from the hateful rhetoric, tell their most vile supporters to pound sand, and lose an election cycle, coming back healthier for it, or they could double down on the hatorade, and doom their party to a lingering, inevitable death. They went all in, and it's too late to fold now.
