Farming with fire! Asparagus in Guinea - Gloucester County Va.

Local knowledge- Guinea is a part of Gloucester Co know for it's hard edged watermen and virtual inbreeding. Going back to the 50's access into the area was controlled by State Troopers - if the locals don't know you there could be real trouble. I've had friends who sailed/boated too close to their crab pots and had rounds fired across the bow of the boat.

So this happened last night. The pic below is from across the York River (about 1/2 a mile).

At the ending of winter/beginning of Spring, locals will burn marsh area. When the marsh regrows, some areas will produce asparagus. Now it's not the same size you see in stores. Often sold at farmers markets and on the roadside.

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — Firefighters have responded to four separate brush fires Friday evening in the Guinea area of Gloucester County.

Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue officials said at one point about 75 to 80 acres were on fire. The call for the fires came in at 7:10 p.m.

They say the fires have now been contained primarily to the Jenkins Neck area.

Units from York County Fire and Safety (two tankers and a chief), Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue (a tanker, brush truck and engine) and Navy Regional Mid-Atlantic (a brush truck, tanker and engine) are assisting Abingdon firefighters.
