BY JOHN BOWDEN - 03/04/18 07:01 AM EST
Former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus is warning Democrats against talk of impeaching President Trump, saying such ideas don't help Democrats connect with voters in moderate districts.
In an interview airing Sunday on AM 970's "The Answer," the former Republican National Committee chair told host John Catsimatidis that such talk among Democrats was a boon for Republicans, who face a challenging midterm season.
"Out of 435 congressional districts, youve got maybe 25 in play. And those 25 are very moderate districts. The Democrats talk about impeaching, and using words like that, that doesnt help them in moderate districts," Priebus said. "It should be an incredible year. But the former top Trump aide cautioned that Republicans still faced a historically challenging scenario: Holding on to majorities in both houses of Congress while their party also controls the White House.
The party in power historically always has a very difficult time, John. I do think its going to be a challenge," Priebus acknowledged.

Someone who's OK with cheating, rigging elections, putting a Russian asset in the Oval Office, destroying the economy...

(58,584 posts)Candidates should run on issues that affect their district and that their constituents care about.
But Trump is always there in the background, and should be used judiciously where it can help.

If this buffoon is giving advice to dems, can some of it be brer rabbit? "Please don't run on just an anti-Trump thing, dems! It won't work." When it fact, the backlash vote is exactly what he fears.

(6,373 posts)People who want to see Trump impeached are already fired up to go vote. Theyre gonna vote in midterms regardless. Bit moderate voters are more concerned with policy than impeachment. Theres a reason Conor Lamb has been vocally silent on Trump in his election. Being anti-trump wont win moderate districts, but talking policy will.
Moderates already dislike Trump and are looking for a reason to vote against him. Give it to them.

(6,373 posts)These districts still have a Trump presence, and a decent chunk of voters who are very happy with him. The key is to talk to your base and the moderates to get them out to vote, while not energizing the opposition.
My train of thought is that in districts that are already blue, being really vocally anti-trump is probably enough to win. But in swing districts, you're probably not winning any new voters that way, and you're going to energize the Deplorables and drive them to the polls. Your base is already coming out in droves because of how fed up they are. Swing voters are looking for a reason, ANY REASON, to vote for you. Give them policy, and then let the anti-trump wave do the rest.
That way, you're getting your base, you're winning over moderates, and you avoid energizing the Trump base.
Conor Lamb in PA-18 is a great example. It went for Trump by 20 points in 2016, but is a complete tossup now. He hasn't invoked Trump's name whatsoever in his campaign...because he knows there's still a sizable Trump presence there, and the last thing he wants to do is be vocally anti-trump and drive them to the polls.

(21,527 posts)Because I'm sure if there is one thing the former head of the GOP is concerned with, it is giving Democrats advice on how to appeal to moderate voters. I'm sure he is sincerely looking to help us improve our chances when he says impeachment talk will hurt us.

Perhaps the shit stain is already writing off 50 seats.
