by Rachel Dicker | 7:44 am, March 5th, 2018
MSNBCs Joe Scarborough ripped Republicans who tolerate President Donald Trumps not-so-funny jokes about becoming president for life.
The Morning Joe host and his guests reacted to Trumps comments about Chinese President Xi Jinping consolidating power to remain in office indefinitely, and he told guests at his Mar-A-Lago club that maybe well give that a shot some day.
-snip-
Last week was just stunning thing after stunning thing after stunning thing, but that was one of the most stunning things, The Washington Posts Eugene Robinson said. The Chinese leader makes a clear play to become leader for life, the heir to Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. The president of the United States you would expect to say, this is not a good idea.'
There are many people who will say, oh, the president was just joking
But there are statements in the past that Donald Trump has made where he has praised Xi for consolidating power host Joe Scarborough said. China has become more and more autocratic over the past six months to a year. Hes made conscious moves to become more and more autocratic.
When Republicans ignore the fact that this man is talking about being president for life, if they think that Donald Trump is joking, then theyre fools, Scarborough added. And I dont think theyre fools. I think they know exactly what hes saying.

(9,670 posts)They consort with Russians as people more favorable than Democrats, so that tells you all you need to know.
This is why we are where we are at ...
Publicly republicans chastise dictatorial leaders around the world but privately they would toss our democracy right out the window if they could get away with it in order to have the same control of America.

(23,003 posts)NO more free speech, no more women controlling their own bodies, no tolerance for different races or sexualities and no rights for them, no voting for anyone other than straight while males over 50, no real political opposition is allowed to run, no controls on industry so air and water become toxic (rich think they can get their own good stuff and let the workers die - fools), no unions, no public education, no healthcare, just russian repugs in charge forever of a deteriorating place that's no at most third behind Russia and China. A country whose only friends are the other dictatorships in the world, which spurns other true democracies and does everything possible to help destroy them as well.

The 1,000 year reich. They want to do what Hitler could not. And, remember, in effect they have already taken over the country, without firing a single shot. Again, what Hitler could not do, they have accomplished. And they are not done yet. lark spells it out, their aims for our country.

(5,808 posts)Light banter between Joe, Mika and tRump, day after day. Treating him like a serious candidate, instead of the clown he is. All combined to make him seem like a real option.
I think they are just trying to put themselves in a different place in history since it is now very clear they were backing the wrong horse. Now that it is obvious how truly bad he is, they want to re-write history like that has been their position all along. But we know better. Some of us remember what you did to aid and abet his candidacy. Better late than never to try to make amends, but dont try to pretend that you didnt give him a free platform day in and day out.

(13,941 posts).... Repeat it often enough and it eventually assumes the prevailing conception of thought. The oddity is dismissed the normalcy is embraced - this is the hallmark of a well practiced and effective propagandist.
Tr-dump is an artist at doing this and successfully carrying it off especially amongst his limited intellect core followers.

Didn't want anything of the like, and this really pisses me off that tRUMP has made a mockery of our country's esteemed history and why things are as they are today, because our ancestors such as Thomas Jefferson, Washington, Hamilton, Lincoln and numerous others stood up against royalty, taxation w/o representation, slavery, and other issues and said 'No'.
You don't joke about this. Period. Especially when you're the president (not mine by the way).
tRUMP has mocked our judiciary system and legislative process, and yet, he took advantage of these systems in order to keep his wealth longer illegally (tRUMP university, cheated hundreds of contractors, etc.). I suspect that he's flagrantly cheated on his taxes too. He calls it paying as little tax as legally possible, but I guarantee you this that someone like tRUMP has cheated in numerous little ways to cheat on his taxes, e.g., the tax deductions for donations/charities. Can't seem to provide any evidence to the majority of these so called donations.
Anyone who is a republican, anyone who's an independent, as well as us should immediately start impeachment proceedings NOW.

(527 posts)I have been telling people since before the election that the Russian Criminal Oligarchical Kleptocracy has been working closely with the Trump Crime Family and the GOP Criminal Enterprise (all my opinion, of course) and that if the Republicans take the WH and congress, they aren't going to give up control. Everyone thought I was crazy and overreacting. "Wait and see..."; "Give him a chance..."; we all are witnessing how that turned out. That is why nobody in the GOP is doing anything - they want a permanent majority and now they have it. Why won't those who profess to be against dumpster switch parties? As Rachel always says, "watch what they do, not what they say." Deflection, distraction, division, devolution into chaos - it is all preplanned and working exactly as they had all hoped.
The only way I see we can have any impact at all is to stop paying taxes and boycott any company, big or small, that supports these megalomaniacal criminals. Of course, it would need to be a coordinated, massive effort because they control so much financial wealth and power, it likely would have no effect unless we came out in full force. The world is watching and waiting. These trial balloons about dictatorship are terrifying. We can't just cower and do nothing. Protests every few months is not going to be enough. We need real organization and a solid show of solidarity. All these other issues - #me too, #never again, etc are more than worthy causes but they mean nothing if we lose our democracy.

(18,898 posts)finish out his term, let alone be "President for life". If Mueller doesn't get him, our newly elected Congressional majority will, and if for some reason they don't get him, a heart attack or stroke will. Any way you cut it, Donald Trump will not be running for re-election in 2020. I hope the country can persevere until then.

(578 posts)Trump enjoys his job but the man has an ego the size of mountain and I can't ever see him quitting the job. He has too much pride and would never live it down if he did quit. Short of getting a heart attack or stroke I do see him running in 2020.

(37,648 posts)That's part of what his ruthless mentor trained him to do/not do. Never quit, always claim you won even when you didn't (fools will believe it), never apologize, destroy someone who goes against you no matter how small they are (a mob rule...you have to send a message), loyalty to you is more important than anything.

(578 posts)love to be president forever. I still have faith of our government system and the majority of people in this country that will not ever allow him to be president forever. At worst we are stuck with this clown for 7 more years.

(51 posts)It has been noted combover's vocabulary has been greatly diminished from even 10 year ago. And, he seems to be stuck on the same adjectives.
His love (or rather fear of being poisoned) of fast food is well known.
He's overweight and cannot seem to travel any distance without a golf cart. Swinging a club and driving to the next hole is not exercise. I do not believe we've been given a full description of his physical condition. Not the first time a president's health issues have not been revealed.
I also strongly suspect he is on some sort of mental health medication. Here are some candidates:
* Antidepressants, of which weight gain, insomnia, (and my favorite) acting on dangerous impulses, are just a few of the known side effects.
* Anti-anxiety medications. Possible side effects include confusion, difficulty thinking or remembering, and yellowing of the skin or eyes (does orange count).
* Stimulants - Possible side effect include difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep (5 AM Twitter outbursts) and personality changes, such as appearing flat or without emotion. Recall he needs notes to remind him of empathy.
* Antipsychotics - psychosis is used to describe conditions that affect the mind, and in which there has been some loss of contact with reality, often including delusions (false, fixed beliefs) or hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that are not really there). Anything here ring a bell?
* Mood stabilizers - Slurred speech
* Anticonvulsants - Possible side effects include mood swings, abnormal thinking, and hair loss.
All of this was cherry picked from the NIMH, National Institute of Mental Health. All of these medications are invaluable to those that need them and this is certainly not a criticism of their use. However, there are explicit warnings stating their side effects. I've listed those I think apply here. If you need these medications, and are exhibiting some of the behaviors above, controlling a nuclear arsenal is the kind of job one should avoid. Just saying.

(578 posts)demographics protect us from going the Germany route. The US is 60 percent white and around 40 percent non-white. Trump is hated by the non-white Demographic by huge margin and factor in at least 40 percent of white people are not down with him which then adds up to the majority of population that is Anti-Trump. Hitler had over 90 percent of Germans backing him during his time in power which made it easy for him to take over the country.

(37,648 posts)But they passed it anyway, didn't they?
Times are different, now. It's the oligarchy that counts. They throw money at the masses, and the stupid ones fall for it and vote for whoever they are told to, and whoever lies to them the most egregiously.
But I hope not enough Senators and Reps are in favor of it. I don't think so. But these are not normal times.

(54,055 posts)He got into power under then-existing parliamentary rules with about 33% of the vote, and quickly made it punishable by death to voice open dissent. A lot more than 10% of the population did not fall for the brainwashing.
