I believe Miss. has to hold now 2 elections in November if i read the law right.

Within 100 days of when governor receives official notice of vacancy, unless vacancy occurs in the year of a general state or congressional election, in which case the vacancy is filled in that election

Seems like the Gov or Legislature would make an interim appt but if not ... huh.
What does that make the breakdown of in terms of D/R counts in the Senate then? 50-49?
Still would need 2 R's to either flip or be forced to resign for whatever reason for D's to get control. Not very likely I guess but I could see McCain resigning. Anyone know if AZ would do an interim appt?
