Meet Beto O'Rourke, The Pro-Pot Former Punk Guitarist Who Could Beat Cruz And Ignite Blue Wave

Meet Beto O'Rourke, The Pro-Pot Former Punk Guitarist Who Could Beat Ted Cruz And Ignite Blue Wave
BY NICOLE GOODKIND ON 3/6/18 AT 6:10 AM

U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke of Texas is a former punk guitarist who curses like a sailor. He’s pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-pot and pro-immigration, and he’s aiming to take Ted Cruz’s Senate seat in November.

In any other year, the Democratic lawmaker would be a political footnote in deep-red Texas, where no one from his party has won statewide office in more than two decades.

But as Democrats head to the polls in their party's primary Tuesday, they are turning out in record numbers, in part to help make O'Rourke their standard-bearer—a surprising sign that Democratic enthusiasm in the Donald Trump era is sweeping even the most conservative states ahead of the midterm elections.

And, as O'Rourke likes to point out on the campaign trail, he has raised nearly three times as much money as Cruz this year, all without accepting contributions from corporations or political action committees.

Cruz is so unpopular even in his home state. I don't see how he could win unless they pull out some bullshit tactic.

His lame radio ad/song thing today being exhibit A. I don’t know how it ends but O’rourke’s campaign seems quicker on its feet and seems to be with the times tonaly where Cruz’s campaign does not.

I think we will see some really nasty ads this summer and fall. They will take off the gloves and try to beat our candidates to pieces using very very nasty ads full of lies. Unfortunately, with ill informed voters, and some independents and leaning democrats who fall into this category this crap works, especially with big ad buys that just beat them senseless with the bad info. I hope he can overcome that, he will have to work really hard to do that once those ads begin.

Texas has been changing. People move. People immigrate. People are children of immigrants and are not impressed with the demonization of immigrants or for Americans being treated like perpetual foreigners in our own country. Racists will be shocked by what sort of Texans are US citizens who can vote, and now have a great motivating reason to.

And many Republicans don't like Cruz all that much.

Beto won't vote to destroy all health care, or give huge windfalls to the wealthy, or protect trump and putin, and Beto won't vote to destroy Social Security , but ted Cruz will. He'll vote anyway trump and putin tells him to vote. Teds in deep trouble the area I'm in. everyone hates him, even some that used to like him.
