Petition drive seeks to take Medicaid expansion question to Nebraska voters

By Martha Stoddard / World-Herald Bureau 2 hrs ago

LINCOLN — A newly announced petition drive seeks to put the question of Medicaid expansion to Nebraska voters.

Backers of the Insure the Good Life campaign have scheduled a Friday launch for their effort to put a proposal on the November ballot.

The measure would allow Nebraskans to decide whether to expand the state's Medicaid program to cover more low-income people, as allowed under the federal Affordable Care Act.

Amanda Gershon of Lincoln, a sponsor of the petition drive, said Nebraskans can no longer wait for elected policymakers to provide expanded health coverage.

Seems a basic question is being asked here: Are Nebraska voters better at looking out for themselves than their elected representatives? Just qualifying this petition for the November ballot should be a tip-off for whether the national party should spend a little time and money in the Cornhusker State. Every dollar the Republicans have to spend defending "safe" states is a dollar they don't have to spend on battleground states. A relatively small investment of time and money in Nebraska could have a very salutary effect in the rest of the country.
