Almost Impressive"

The White House and its own State Department are currently involved in a public war about how the secretary of state got fired. The presidents personal assistant has been dismissed amid reports that he is being investigated for serious financial crimes. The presidents nominee to lead the CIA (whose current director, Mike Pompeo, has been nominated to take over at State) turns out to have been personally involved in the torture of a mistakenly identified terror suspect and the destruction of related evidence. And thats just the stuff thats going on in the White House today!
Lets see what the most powerful elected official in the nations opposition party has to say about all of it:
The instability of this administration in just about every area weakens America.
If hes confirmed, we hope that Mr. Pompeo will turn over a new leaf and will start toughening up our policies towards Russia and Putin.
Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) March 13, 2018
We hope that they will turn over a new leaf. Someone hose down Comandante Schumer before he accidentally starts the revolution!
Nancy Pelosi came out firing too:
Whenever Secretary Tillersons successor goes into meetings with foreign leaders, his credibility will be diminished as someone who could be here today and gone tomorrow. https://t.co/DdyLCbpUiG
Nancy Pelosi (@NancyPelosi) March 13, 2018
A diminishment of credibility? [Crowd gasps, several people faint. A child asks his mother, Can she say that???] Nancy, dont hurt em!

(60,014 posts)off the table to rather tepid slogans, I don't think that we've had very many good responses to what's been going on for a long time now.
But....I don't have an answer. I do know there are better ideas getting slung around DU than I see being stated by many of "our" politicians. But it is tough, I agree - we don't want to sink to their level - but also should stop carrying butter knives to nuke fights.

(42,306 posts)So, sure, let's write an article criticizing Dems because they didn't say....what, exactly?
I fear the media will never learn from their multiple mistakes of 2016.
What's the saying, if someone is digging themselves a hole get out of their way?

IOW, don't just step back, but actively work to make sure the opponent sinks deeper into the hole.
That's what overly nice Dems like Schumer and Pelosi fail to do - they waste such moments with overly tepid responses, which lets Trump recover every time.

Republicans are imploding, we are winning lots of seats, Republicans are even giving up on claiming that their big tax cut in the Pennsylvania race. No sense giving Republicans a cause to rally around.
If you doubt Pelosi's efficacy at her job, let's compare the last three House Speakers. Paul Ryan spent 8 years screaming about the ACA and somehow couldn't actually manage to get a repeal passed on the first go-round. John Boehner quit because he couldn't corral his caucus. Pelosi never suffered the embarrassment of not being able to count her votes before bringing a bill to the floor.

Stay out of Trump's invite to chaos. He's picking fights with anyone opposing him. Let him dig that hole deeper...bet Mueller's watching.
Smart move Shumer.

Can we please stop the knee- jerk Dem criticism and think strategically?
