and I got a souvenir. Someone was wearing a t-shirt that said "I Hate Fox News" and I said how much I liked it and she came back and gave me one. Several people wanted to interview me and asked me why I was there and what I thought about the fucking moron. I could go on and on for 14 hours and still not cover everything. There were more cops in riot gear than there were protesters. The police were cool, the sheriff's are the evil ones for some reason (what is the difference?). At an anti moron rally last July there were sheriffs there and they stood around and allowed the neo Nazi instigators to disrupt our speakers for over 30 min until a speaker (a former council person called the chief of police and told her to get them to separate the neo Nazis from the peaceful people).
The "Free Speech" zone at the border wall is for the Moron lovers (all draped in American flags of course) and the local news shows them more than the anti Moron/anti tRump people (like me). We stayed away from them since they are crazy.
There were rallies in San Diego last night, this morning and today all around San Diego.
Tomorrow is the WALKOUT... don't forget to go at 10:00 Wed AM at all schools in all time zones. Hey Hey NRA, How Many people Did You Kill Today?
School Walkouts March 14th 10:00 AM in all time zones.

Enough! National School Walkout
Wednesday, March 14, 10am
For More Information
Hosted by Womens March and Womens March Youth
https://www.facebook.com/WomensMarchYouth/
https://www.actionnetwork.org/event_campaigns/enough-national-school-walkout
Womens March Youth EMPOWER is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part in a #NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10am across every time zone to protest Congress inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.
Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school. Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day.
We are not safe at school. We are not safe in our cities and towns. Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that addresses the public health crisis of gun violence. We want Congress to pay attention and take note: many of us will vote this November and many others will join in 2020. Join us in saying #ENOUGH!

This was my 12th rally in 18 months and it was a little different from the others for different reasons. The rallies yesterday and today were at various times and locations. Today was up in the air since no one knew when he was coming and the Moron wouldn't confirm his itinerary. I checked it out two weeks ago with my activist contacts and it wasn't clarified until this past weekend and today it was delayed a few hours so since I am a 32 min drive from where it took place today I was cool and waited until he was actually here. Tons of police were there since the last time he was here in 2016 there was a lot of violence.
My Pink Floyd inspired sign on was a big hit...my fingers are still stained orange from the pastels I used for his skin though. I made a giant white brick wall with one brick missing and the untanned circles around his baggy eyes peeked through the space in the wall (along with his bushy, white/yellow eyebrows and "hair don't" . I wrote NO WALLS in the same font that is on The Wall album cover. I can't post photos on my touchscreen tablet or I'd show you.
This rally was also different in that we were told that sticks and dowels wouldn't be allowed in the area due to the alt right using poles from flags and signs to hurt people so I had to wear it around my neck and/or hold it over my head.

(2,434 posts)elected and it's political and most police actually go thru the academy and are qualified as law enforcement. Also, sheriffs are often county-wide and police are city-wide. Republicans are well-schooled on local voting and that accounts for conservative school boards and sheriffs.
SoCalNative
(4,613 posts)the deputies are not. They are screened, hired and go through the academy just like all other police officers. At least in California.
The sheriff's department normally will have jurisdiction in unincorporated areas of a county, or contract with cities and/or agencies (in L.A. the sheriffs are contracted by the city of West Hollywood, as well as some others, and used to be contracted by the city of L.A. as transit police on the routes in L.A. County).
OldHippieChick
(2,434 posts)sheriffs were evil. So what is your take? Do the Sheriffs choose their deputies and therefor choose subordinates in their own image?
SoCalNative
(4,613 posts)any differently than any other PD chooses, recruits, hires, trains their officers. In L.A the Sheriff is more like the chief of police and has little, if anything, to do with choosing the recruits.
OldHippieChick
(2,434 posts)sheriffs to be evil and police not so much?
SoCalNative
(4,613 posts)where there are certain Unincorporated county areas, the sheriffs who patrol there are know to be bigger a-holes than our local PD. They are (and have always been) refferd to as the Briggs Pigs. No clue other than I think they tend to have a more "wild west" mentality than our local force.
OldHippieChick
(2,434 posts)Why are the sheriffs bigger assholes than police? If they are not choosing their own deputies then how does the sheriffs office become so much "redder" than the police?
SoCalNative
(4,613 posts)Sheriff deputies and sheriffs overall tend to be in more "red" areas by and large. But I consider most police departments to have their share of assholes, some more than others. A lot of ex-military and that demographic tends to skew conservative for the most part.

...areas of the county.
Head Cop -- at least in my neck of the woods -- is hired by the County Board of Supervisors after a job search.
I do not know how training programs differ for their respective officers, but the attitude of the top guy is always influential.
EDIT: My bad. I meant to say the Chief of Police is hired by the City Council.
OldHippieChick
(2,434 posts)town and always noticed a difference between county sheriffs and city police. Think this is a good avenue for discussion.
Hekate
(90,564 posts)...so my experience is limited to that arena. The Sheriff was always more of a problem than the top cop, possibly because of his sense of entitlement due to his having been elected. When my commission was doing a report on all the departments, each department head came to us to be interviewed -- except Sheriff Brown. He sent his lieutenant.

(24,250 posts)The only ones who can fire a Sheriff in California are the voters. The only other official who would have any authority over the Sheriff would be the state Attorney General, and they strongly resist getting involved. Years ago the Sheriff in my county was so obviously corrupt in so many ways and people complained to the AG, who was Jerry Brown at the time and he didn't even respond. We did eventually vote him out and elected a new Sheriff.
The County Board of Supervisors have control of the Sheriff's budget, but they always give him pretty much whatever he wants. It doesn't help when the BoS are in the Sheriff's pocket and are colluding with him in his corruption. The Sheriff is also tasked in California with running the County Jail, and that forces all police forces to rely on him. For instance, our old Sheriff just didn't like Native Americans and their casinos so when tribal police arrested anyone he refused to let them bring them to his jail and they had to transport them over 100 miles to a state facility.
In short, the Sheriff in a California county has the power to make life miserable for just about anyone he wants to, and many of them act like it.

(51,568 posts)the last time the moron was here was during the campaign. There was notice sent out that moron lovers would be kept in a different area from us and for the most part they were. Tons of riot gear cops were facing us as the motorcade went past us (coming and going). The moron's supporters are loud and obnoxious and are proud to show it (they have giant pro tRump signs and wear "45" t-shirts...apparently their combined IQ). He didn't stop and speak with anyone at the stops except for local pro moron GOP politicians (like Duncan Hunter Jr.). Tonight he is going to the GOP campaign fundraiser where seats are $35,000- $250,000 per person in Beverly Hills (I hear that you have a choice of chicken or well done steak with ketchup). There are protests there too.

(51,568 posts)I mentioned Roger Water's show at Coachella '16 when pro moron fans walked out of the show when Roger did the pig and images on the wall to someone today at the protest and couldn't get over how someone would spend $300+ on a show KNOWING well that Roger is very political and socially conscience and walk out due to that. I would have killed to see that show. I saw his shows in 2012 and 2013 and was speechless...it was a completely theatrical experience for the eyes, ears and brain.
