(18,625 posts)I saw him in person a couple of years ago at Cal Tech.
He started his talk about black holes by showing a bizarre clip from Disney's The Black Hole with figures in hoods walking around on catwalks. He said we don't know what it's actually like inside a black hole but it's unlikely to be this.
Afterwards a young girl with ALS came by to see him.
I was standing a few feet away.
He replied to her "I'm very glad to meet you." after a wait of about a minute.
A truly remarkable person in so many ways.

We can only hope to be so intelligent, witty and kind as was Dr. Hawking. Truly our world is now a darker, sadder place for his passing.

When my hubs did research in applied physics in Cambridge, he literally ran into Prof. Hawking one day when rounding a corner. He profusely apologized.

(15,265 posts)Here is a link to an article on how Intel helped improve Stephan Hawkings speech synthesis and computer interface system. They developed something called ACAT, after Assistive Contextually Aware Toolkit)
https://www.wired.com/2015/01/intel-gave-stephen-hawking-voice/
Intel has released the ACAT software online for public use. Encouraging its use, development, and adaptstion to help other people with communication challenges.

While not in the same league, lastly, a hackaday project for an online dectalk-speech-synthesis project that use the voice that Hawking used.

(81,442 posts)Stephen Hawking: Donald Trump Appeals to Lowest Common Denominator
by Alastair Jamieson
May 31 2016, 8:03 am ET
The author of A Brief History of Time was asked in an interview whether his knowledge of the universe meant he could explain the presumptive Republican nominee's appeal.
I cant, Hawking replied. He is a demagogue who seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
The University of Cambridge professor, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 1963 but went on to become one of the worlds most famous scientists, gave his thoughts on Trump and more in an exclusive interview with NBC News U.K. news partner, ITV News.
