Mike Allen: Top Democrats tell me that if they take back the House in November, a restoration of Speaker Nancy Pelosi is no longer guaranteed.
In fact, some well-wired House Democrats predict she will be forced aside after the election and replaced by a younger, less divisive Dem . Pelosi has hung in through the minority, and remains the partys most consistent fundraiser. As for whether shell return as Speaker, she has just said that its up to the members. (Her allies note that she has never lost a leadership vote.)
Playbook: Nancy Pelosi has thick skin. She would love nothing more than for Democrats to win back the House majority. If people dump on her en route to the majority, fine.

(9,874 posts)There's a lot of work to do first. If we win back the House then we can fight each other over leadership posts with smiles on our faces, but until then they shouldn't talk about it.

(30,481 posts)A vote for our leadership will be held and Pelosi wont be in the running.
All of this is nothing more than a distraction from the Republican shit show.

(10,870 posts)I love what she has done for our party and our country.
But she is simply not relatable to many of our voters.
Plus, shes a lightning rod that the left uses to bludgeon us with.
Lamb blunted that in his race by saying he would not vote for her as Speaker.
I wish she would retire to an awesome party and a resounding ovation from Democrats.
We all need to know when its time to retire.
I love you, Nancy. You are a true patriot and a great American.

I think over 75 is just not the time to run for an office.
Do we want all of our leaders in their 80s when in Office ?
Go enjoy your retirement or do some part time work or volunteering.

(17,003 posts)She has done an amazing job of keeping Dems together but if we get the majority back I think it's time for her to pass the baton on to the next generation. We haven't done the best job of grooming new leaders and that would be an excellent way to start.

(14,249 posts)at certain points, in the election cycle while we dont see any similar speculation or demands to step aside regarding any other high level leadership ...
For example, the GOP just got its clocked cleaned in Pennsylvania, but no one is blaming Paul Ryan or speculating whether hes in trouble or obsessing over whether he should step down. But Pelos, whose party WON the race, is being subjected to this.
When the GOP lost he Alabama Senate seat, there was no drumbeat for McConnells ouster. But when Osoff lost in Georgia, it was Nancy Pelosis fault.
Its Pelosis fault when we lose. Its Pelosis fault when we win.
See a pattern here?

(58,785 posts)Nancy has always been a uniter, a builder of coalitions, the key to her great competence. Her caucus won't be choosing someone else in November.
I'm very disgusted that, just as with their common demonizing of the ACA, including sharing propaganda, the rule-or-ruin left has been piggybacking on the Republican's tactic of demonizing Pelosi. And claiming she's a handicap to our party. Contemptible, but they can't argue on issues.
Here's Senator Barney Frank last fall on the right's attacks on Pelosi:
* First, there is the fact that she is the only woman in American history to hold one of the three major policy-making positions in the federal government.
* Second, using San Francisco as a symbol of moral decay is a convenient way of dog-whistling several prejudices which "respectable" politicians do not want to voice explicitly.
* Third, less recognized but maybe most important, she has been one of the most successful Speakers in decades. The negative passions she incites are clearly fueled by her record: Much of this year's Republican agenda consists of efforts to undo the legislative record she helped compile in 2009-2010.
Having noted all of this, I believe that the benefit Republicans get from demonizing her have been exaggerated. Anger at President Obama was the determining factor in the 2010 midterm elections and Democrats did much better than the norm in each of that year's special elections.
The centrality of the anti-Pelosi campaign in Republican plans for the 2018 House elections is not because of its potency, but because of the weakness of every other option. Demonizing Nancy Pelosi is not a magic bullet; it's simply the only one they have.

(58,785 posts)can only fool a few, those who want to be fooled, naturally prone to suspicion and mistrust.
But as you say. That's sometimes enough enough to be spoilers if they can't be winners, and when's the latter ever happened? They've not been tagged with that "rule-or-ruin" description for nothing. The only lesson the true believers took from 2016 was that their righteous campaigns could have bitter success against the corruption that rules the rest of us.

(146,288 posts)We have elections to win in November. If we succeed, there will be an election in the House to select the Speaker. Until then, we really, really need to focus on winning back a majority. We do that one seat at a time. The rest will take care of itself.
Pelosi is not the issue. The Republican majority is the issue.
This whole business is a frustrating waste of our time and energy, I think.

(54,369 posts)Like Angela Merkel, if Pelosi feels she can still do the job effectively, and she still wants to do the job, I doubt a well-coordinated program of negative innuendo on Fox and on the internet will convince her of the opposite, even if it is repeated on DU twenty times a day. She knows the ropes better than anyone at this point. It's her call as to whether she wants to go for it again or show someone else how to do it with some on-the-job training. ANY new Democratic Speaker will be calling her five times a day asking "NOW what do I do?" for the simple reason that Pelosi will know the answer to the question.

How about this suggestion instead. Let's win the House in 2018 first, and then worry about who will be the Democratic leader in the House
The only purpose of gossip like this is to stir the pot with hope of causing disunity among Democrats.
In 2013 Allen was involved in a payola scandal where he would give favorable Politico coverage in return for advertising dollars.
