Tom Steyer believes the millennials are our future. So he's spending tens of millions of dollars to organize them, and let them lead the way.
Steyer, a billionaire former hedge fund executive turned liberal political activist, has committed to spending $30 million in 10 states to register and energize progressive, millennial voters $2.5 million of which will fund efforts in Wisconsin, home of Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.
"We are focused on registering, engaging and empowering the under-represented parts of society, which very much includes millennials," Steyer said in an interview. "Traditionally, people have felt organizing millennials is too expensive, too time-consuming. We feel it is the essence of democracy to make sure the parts of society that arent participating enough participate."
........................ the group plans to have 53 paid staff working on 35 campuses.
At least four of those campuses will be community colleges, which generally don't see the kind of political engagement efforts that larger universities do, a spokesman for the group said. NextGen staff will also target millennials who aren't in school, Steyer said
"Were able to fill some of these gaps that other (organizing) groups arent in," said George Olufosoye, the group's Wisconsin youth organizing director.
In Wisconsin, the group will focus its efforts on supporting Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin and Democratic challengers to Walker and Ryan........................

(36,416 posts)Rumors of his running have been bandied about for some time, but he publicly announced he's not going to run for Senate or the governor's office in California this year.

(36,416 posts)In 2010, Tom Steyer and his wife, Kat Taylor, pledged to contribute most of their wealth to charitable causes during their lifetimes. That same year, Tom worked to defeat Proposition 23, an attempt by the oil industry to roll back Californias historic plan to reduce pollution and address climate change.
In 2012, Tom led a campaign to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in California schools annually by closing a corporate tax loophole. To date, Proposition 39 has put nearly a billion dollars into California schools and clean energy projects, saving millions of dollars in annual energy costs.
Tom founded a successful California business, which he left to work full-time on nonprofit and advocacy efforts. He served as President of NextGen Climate, an organization he founded in 2013 to prevent climate disaster and promote prosperity for all Americans. In 2017 NextGen Climate expanded their progressive fight to include immigration, health care, prosperity, and equality as NextGen America.
Toms dedication to public service is greatly inspired by his wife, Kat, the co-CEO of Beneficial State Bank in Oakland. They founded this nonprofit community bank in 2007 to provide loans to people and small businesses shut out by the traditional banking system. Unlike most banks, by statute Beneficial State Bank invests any profits back into the community.
Tom and Kat live in San Francisco and have four children.

(9,999 posts)like they did with Soros. There has to be some reason that they've remained relatively silent on Steyer. Something about him must scare them and they don't want to draw any attention to him.

(8,038 posts)Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates started The Giving Pledge in 2010. The Giving Pledge is a commitment by the world's wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to giving back. Tom Steyer is one of those individuals.
Here is Mr. Steyer speaking at the Convention in 2012:
In the comments section of this on YouTube page:
Brad Richdale: Tom is the real deal. I went to Prep School with him at Exeter. He was a great athlete, student and leader. If he runs for President (which I hope he does) he'd win; you can't help but like Tom when you meet him. It's hard to argue against him and win.
As of May, 2017, The Giving Pledge includes 168 wealthy individuals and couples from 21 countries.

(14,565 posts)You have to get these kids registered and aligned with the party as close to their 18th birthday as possible. The net gain right now would be tremendous, although not quite as high as months ago when Trump's approval was lower.
Too bad Steyer didn't start with this immediately instead of wasting time with that televised impeachment campaign, but at least he didn't dawdle too long and maybe he needed that type of exposure to boost his profile and attract people to work with him.
Community colleges are a terrific resource. Hard to believe they have been comparatively ignored for so long.

(4,450 posts)really, because many have. There are moments when I think the rational thing to do would be to write off Wisconsin and focus on places with more favorable demographics like Florida, Arizona, NC. But I am glad for this, really glad.
