Students must say #Enough to voter apathy

<snip>

The students showed a determination, introspection and balance of idealism and pragmatism missing from prior protests, most recently the 2016 walkouts over Donald Trump’s presidential victory.

And if they harbored any illusion that they won’t need all that and more, they only needed to consider the National Rifle Association’s tweet Wednesday during the protests: a photo of the type of assault weapon used in the Parkland shooting with the message, “I’ll control my own guns, thank you.”

More protests are planned — a march next Saturday in Washington, action on the April 20 anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre.

In recent midterm elections, their turnout has been no higher than 21 percent, the New York Times reported last year. If that holds true this November, they will cast only 10 percent of all ballots. Only 60 percent of millennials in California were registered to vote as of August, compared with 78 percent of baby boomers, and less than a third said they were likely to vote, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.

We encourage students eligible to vote to register by the May 21 deadline, and those yet too young to still get involved — to lobby your parents and older friends, work for a candidate, and say #Enough to voter apathy. - VC Star

When I taught first and sixth grades my students loved to vote. We voted with privacy boards and anonymous ballots tallied by them for issues concerning them and they LOVED it. I did this for over 15 years as a teacher in public school. What happens between then and the time they get old enough to vote?

When I was at the #ENOUGH rally at my school district's Ed Center on Wed. I spoke with another adult about this issue. I asked her why is becoming the legal age to vote not held in such high esteem and celebrated as much as being allowed to legally drive?
