Scoop: Saturday gun marches will blanket U.S.

https://www.axios.com/scoop-saturday-gun-marches-will-blanket-us-1521448445-feefcbd0-de05-4a8b-910b-8dcdd118d5c6.html

Scoop: Saturday gun marches will blanket U.S.
Mike Allen

On Saturday, in conjunction with the Florida students’ #NeverAgain march in D.C., teen organizers will hold 700 other marches across the country, covering 387 congressional districts in all 50 states.

The scope: Marches will be held in the biggest cities — New York, L.A., Chicago, Denver and Atlanta — and also small towns, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, which is providing grants and guidance to local organizers.

The latest count is 819 marches: 725 are in the U.S., and 94 abroad. (Search here by country, city or post code.)
The solidarity marches are being organized partly by students, with speaking roles largely going to teens and survivors of gun violence.
The events will include a big voter-registration push.
In addition to marches and rallies, advocates will hold musical performances, poetry readings and moments of silence.

John Feinblatt — president of Everytown for Gun Safety, founded by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg — told me this is the “mass-shooting generation” that’s mobilizing:

“We’re witnessing a fearless group of determined students all over the country with a unifying message: ‘You’re the adults. Protect us.’”

Behind the curtain: The group is offering local organizers a PDF "tool kit" that includes downloadable graphics, sample Facebook and Instagram posts, a draft press release, and talking points for a rally speech or media interviews.

The handbook's social-media advice includes ... "What to post: Photos of the march ... Fun or poignant march signs ... Photos of the crowd to show scale."

"Be sure your tweets and instagram posts all use the hashtag #MarchForOurLives."
"Tag @AMarch4OurLives, @Everytown, @MomsDemand, and @GiffordsCourage in your photo and video posts so that we can find your content and amplify it."

The gun crowd is mobilizing as well, the NRA has gained over 500k members this year.

Even if the marches average 500 people, they are still out numbered by the gunners flocking to the NRA

Those expecting a turning point are going to be disappointed, especially since support for assault weapons bans and other more restrictive control measures are lowest with millennials and highest with the boomers

This is another city / rural split issue which can be deceptive. We will see rallies in cities which makes for great TV. What we don't see are all the country folk out plinking with their guns in the middle of nowhere

Safe storage, universal background checks, and raising the purchase age should be the focus

If you are interested in going and will be near Fort Collins or Loveland on Saturday, pm me, as I am aware of those services--, though there may be others available in other communities. I don't want to post the link because I don't want trolls who see this post to tamper with this process.

Marchers are to start gathering at noon at Austin City Hall and then march to the Capitol from there. I had forgotten about the Democratic Convention. I have not attended a political convention, although I was considering this one before the march came up. If you’re a neophyte, as I am, is it worth the time?

On a neighborhood site. The humpers rushing to argue. The one lady saying the same- the left is organizing your kids along with the teachers, the school district etc. She was citing possible lawsuits against school districts (can’t recall where) and wondering if parents here (central Ohio) should consider it. Good grief.

Taking my immediate family with me. I’ve been organizing protestors for Las Vegas before I leave.

I lost friends on October 1st, or a few weeks after that, and listened to other close friends talking about how the head and brains and blood from a stranger just exploded all over them. I got frantic texts from my son-in-law who was boarding up hotel doors to prevent what was assumed to be an entire ISIS hit squad, like in Mumbai a few years back. I assumed the Grown Ups would help. They, instead, used this horrific attack to prove that the shitty gun laws they’d written don’t work and therefore laws against guns don’t work despite all the real world, easily demonstrable the truth present in states and countries all around us. It was just absurd. Nonsense.

I sank into a depression and was just starting to snap out of it when Southerland Springs happened. And those fuckers STILL went to “Thoughts and prayers” and “bringing Jesus back into our lives.” He shot everyone in that church. Every single person hoping and praying. And rather than sensibility, we go right back to Waiting for Godot: the loonies use it as an accuse to prove the safety of assualt rifles. This is because a couple of good ol boys waited until dozens were shot, bleeding, many taking their last breaths. The the lunatic realized he was out of bullets — the few hundred he’d brought were all he’d needed — so he dropped his magazines and rifle and moved to get in his car. The red necks, having so bravely waited out the shooting, then saw an unarmed man and took a couple of pot shots and probably hit him. The killer drove down the road, called his dad, and then shot himself with his own pistol. People say this with a serious face and then claim that I’m the crazy one because I think we can lessen these incidents. I thought someone else would do something this time, surely; instead they used a horrific mass murder to erroneously conclude that guns save lives (except 100% of the lives lost that day, as well as the horrific aftermath from dozens of surviving parishioners).

Parkland rolls around. The news is awful. It’s hard to teach school with all of the electronic information we’re all inundated with. This is cliche, I know, but I swear that it’s the truth. While discussing escape routes and cowering in fear methods and democratically deciding which option would be the best in which situation. One of the kids said, “Why doesn’t somebody do something?” I said that I wondered the same thing. The kid said, “I’m just a kid, but you’re someone. Why don’t you do something?”

Turns out I’m actually someone. That was a couple of 17 year olds who didn’t panic while on camera, because they’ve spent their entire lives on those cameras. That short haired Latinx is tougher than I’ll ever be.

I’ve dedicated my professional career to empowering & educating the upcoming generation. I feel optimistic for the first time in a long time. I feel both dumb and thankful: I wasn’t supposed to be looking for someone to fix it, I was suppose to be molding someone to lead this fight.

I’d make a shitty political candidate. I know my flaws. But that hasn’t stopped me from donating, voluteering, communicating with my neighbors, and generally trying to educate the giant city instead of one overcrowded high school.
