It is a cancer.
Ive begun the slow process of weaning myself off of the platform by methodically running a script that will delete my old content. And theres a lot. There are likes and shares. There are long posts I wrote to impress my friends. There are thousands of WordPress notifications that tell the world what Im doing. In fact, I would wager I use Facebook more to broadcast my ego than interact with real humans. And I suspect that most of us are in a similar situation.
There is a method to my madness. I like Facebook Messenger and I like that Facebook is now a glorified version of OAuth. Its a useful tool when it is stripped of its power. However, when it is larded with my personal details it is a weapon and a liability.
Think about it: any posts older than about a week are fodder for bots and bad actors. Posts from 2016? 2017? Why keep them? No one will read them, no one cares about them. Those You and Joe have known each other for five years auto-posts are fun but does anyone care?
Ultimately youve created the largest dossier on yourself and youve done it freely, even gleefully. This dossier reflects your likes, your dislikes, your feelings, and political leanings. It includes clear pictures of your face from all angles, images of your pets and family, and details your travels. You are giving the world unfettered access to your life.
Its wonderful to imagine that this data will be used by a potential suitor who will fall in love with your street style. Its wonderful to imagine you will scroll through Facebook at 80 and marvel at how you looked at the turn of the century. Its wonderful to imagine that Facebook is a place to share ideas, dreams, and hopes, a human-to-human connection engine that gives more than it takes.
None of that will happen.
Facebook is a data collection service for those who want to sell you products. It is the definitive channel to target you based on age, sex, geographic location, political leanings, interests, and marital status. Its an advertisers dream and it is wildly expensive in terms of privacy lost and cash spent to steal that privacy. It is the perfect tool for marketers, a user-generated paradise that is now run by devils.
Will you delete Facebook? Probably not. Will I? Im working on it.
Ive already been deleting old tweets after realizing that border police and potential employers may use what I write publicly against me. Im clearing out old social media accounts and, as I mentioned before, deleting old Facebook posts, thus ensuring that I will no longer be a target for companies like Cambridge Analytica. But we love our social media, dont we? The power it affords. The feeling of connection. In the absence of human interaction we cling to whatever dark simulacrum is available. In the absence of the Town Square we talk to ourselves. In the absence of love and understanding we join the slow riot of online indifference.
When Travis Kalanick led his ride-sharing company down the dark path to paranoia, bro culture, and classist rantings we reacted by deleting the app. We didnt want to do business with that particular brand of company. Yet we sit idly by while Facebook sells us out and its management pummels and destroys all competition.

(7,006 posts)But considering Facebook has lost 5 BILLION is its valuation today, surely Zuckerberg's Bottom Line (The All Mighty Dollar He Caves) Does Care and He or Sheryl Are Not Happy Campers. That Is A Start...
Action Alerts Plus holding Facebook has suspended U.K.-based Cambridge Analytica amid suggestions over the weekend that the British firm had lied about deleting user data that it had gained through the use of a psychology-test application posted on Facebook.com. Facebook has also suspended Cambridge Analytica parent Strategic Communications Laboratories.
Cambridge Analytica reportedly used the data while doing work in Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, but denies that it misused or even held onto information that it gained from up to 50 million Facebook users.
However, both U.S. and U.K. lawmakers made noise about this over the weekend. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey indicated through online posts that she would investigate. British Parliament member Damian Collins also expressed interest in having Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testify about the possibility that social-media manipulation impacted the 2016 Brexit vote."

(15,237 posts)LinkedIn (owned by Microsoft), twitter (sells to everybody), etc.
Some sites are very good at removing any information that can identify individuals but many are not (and they get paid more for PII.)
Of course, fb and everyone else, tries to put trackers on web pages that you bring up. Even if they don't get your personal ID they still can figure it out based on multiple site visits.
It's incredibly stupid that every person in the world needs to defend themselves against these vultures. That should be the role of a regulatory body - but not a censor!

(15,237 posts)Of course I always wonder about using "American" instead of "US".
But in an ideal world wouldn't we be able to have some standards for communications that weren't dependent on current national politics and regimes? While the UN is imperfect, it seems much better than the USofDump or US-USSR.

(7,006 posts)However, how personal is a Google Search in comparison to Facebook having all the inside data on one's life, friends and family plus selling that to the highest bidder. That's another level.

(4,916 posts)You know that Google has to make money in order to provide all the services that they do for free, right?
It's like people that get pissed because Google uses your GPS information on Android phones but are the same people that use Google Maps for traffic information. I'm glad Google takes my GPS information so I can know what traffic is like basically real time on roads there is no reason for anyone to get information about without Google.
Sure, Google monetizes my search history. But I don't need to click on the ads they provide me.
The River
(2,615 posts)use it. I also use an app that requests thousands of random searches so my real searches are just a small fraction of the data.
Hi-tech is a double edge sword and we're willingly being cut into fractious consumer segments.

They're idiots for screwing up their business and their brand so badly, in the service of Trump.
That stink does not wash off.

(6,399 posts)I do the same, have about 50,000 followers on my business page, and engage throughout the day with lots of updates that generate shares and views/visits.
Would love to hear from these folks as to where I can get the same kind of results.

(19,038 posts)Facebook needs to be completely transparent with its users, or I am deleting them. Which means I am deleting them because they know that almost no one would use the app if we knew what they were doing with our data.

(12,154 posts)Personally I don't use it, but there are many millions of people (including most of my friends and family) who do.
I know several people who have outsourced or replicated much of their social lives to Facebook, and have no concerns about the issues Biggs brings up. Some even identify strongly with Facebook and have an emotional and defensive reaction to any criticism of the platform.
I hope the #deletefacebook campaign wins a lot of converts, but I'm not holding my breath.

(9,442 posts)Take a hammer to it and stay offline. Oh, and those smart phones, don't get anywhere near those things! This is the world we live in now, it's just not practical to think we can get away from this stuff. Sure, delete you FB account but your information is already out there. There's no getting away from it.

(9,951 posts)...my "liberal" or "progressive" voice will stay on Facebook. By the way, every word you say on a telephone and every word you type on a computer is collected and used as data. Facebook and Twitter do allow some control... your telephone company, bank cards and supermarket cards collect you without warning.
