Uber halts use of its self-driving vehicles across North America after woman was fatally struck by an autonomous car in Arizona

By Faiz Siddiqui March 19 at 1:09 PM

Uber has halted testing of its autonomous vehicles across North America, the company announced, after a woman was struck and killed by one of its self-driving cars in Tempe, Ariz. early Monday.

The moratorium on testing includes San Francisco, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Toronto, Uber said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation into the crash, said Eric Weiss, a spokesman for the NTSB.

Uber issued a short statement.

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident,” a company spokeswoman said.

right on an issue.

I was arguing only two weeks ago on this forum that the idea of self-driving vehicles would get someone killed. I'm so sorry I was correct so soon.

I wonder if anyone argued at the beginning of the twentieth century that driving cars would get someone killed. I also wonder if they feigned distress while patting themselves on the back.

No one died because you were correct any more than its my fault someone will die from an accidental gun-discharge this week simply because I stated as much.

Logic... it's not just for easy-A classes in college anymore.
