I live in a liberal bubble.

It's so liberal here, more people in my area voted for Jill Stein than for DT.

So I'm NOT going to go off FB. It's the main way I stay in touch with people who are outside the bubble, people in the states I grew up in, and understand their thinking a bit better. And I make an effort when I'm on FB to counter the fake news with the same kind of MSM reporting I post here.

Today I had a conversation about gun control with someone living in a red state. I didn't jump all over her for owning a gun. I listened to her when she told me about all the training she had.

And then I said I was glad she'd had that training. I pointed out that in many states, no training is required. She didn't realize that.
And in many states, no concealed carry permit is required. She didn't realize that, either.

It turns out, there are many areas of gun control she and I could agree on RIGHT NOW.

We both think that concealed carry permits should be required in all states.
That training should be required in all states.
That the age requirement should be raised to 21 for all guns.
That military grade assault weapons shouldn't be sold to civilians.
That bump stocks should not be sold.
That the database needs to be expanded and maintained.

And so, thanks to this FB conversation with a red state friend, we were able to come to an agreement on what legislation we can support. And I think everyone should interact across the partisan divide to try to learn where we can agree. FB is one way some of us do this.

Your experience, of course, may differ.

Spent an hour with a guy whose pro gun post hit my wall. We were FB friends because of a game we both play.

He was a brick wall on guns. About a week later I unfriended him as a dog whistle racist post from him wound up on my wall.

The 2nd conversation was with a young man who I have known since he was born. He’s a family friend. He posted a pro gun meme that wound up on my wall.

I spent 2 hours trying to convince them that there has to be some rational approach to improving our laws to save lives. I gave examples, the works.

I finally gave up. At least 2 hours invested and there wasn’t a single improvement to the law either he or his 20 something buddies would agree was necessary.

He said he had “empathy” for the victims. I signed off with the only thing he had empathy for was his unfettered right to keep the status quo.

I won’t engage anymore. They need to be defeated at the ballot box.

I’m happy you had a better experience!

and took something positive from them, even if the friend you were addressing directly didn't.

So I wouldn't assume for sure your effort had no positive impact.

But I understand that there are certain people it is pointless to try to discuss issues with -- and I avoid serious discussions with these people.

Thinking many here don’t realize that older folks not real old but 60 plus most of us are not on other social sites FB is the one we connect with.

Not just my family but my best friend from high school who lives in Tasmania now, I enjoy the little things, pic of her and hubby at the pub, camping, festivals, etc.

She enjoys my pics of silly St Pat’s pics.

Online friend I met who lives in Sidney Australia gives me a different perspective of life from the other side of the planet.

I belong to a golden retriever group and its my go to place for cute dog pics when I need to chill.

I ignore the ads, delete things I don’t like.

Yes, I am mad that FB didn’t stop what is happening with russian bots but until someone creates something better we can all switch to, I am still there.

My profile pic is from first womens march my favorite sign in it that says, Make America Kind Again.
