Rachel covered Cambridge Analytica for the first half hour of her show. This is a tremendous story with many tentacles, and even Rachel, given her brilliance, but limited TV time, can't unravel it all at once.
This is a complex, multi-layered story that just can't be laid out quickly in a simplified format.
It includes a Russian professor of psychology, Steve Bannon, Jarad Kushner, Corey Lewdenowski, Facebook, and the profiles of 50 million Facebook users, (yes, 50 million people). It also inclues a Russian oil company that had no interest in psychological profiles, the Ted Cruz and Donald Trump campaigns, psychological profiles, the targeting of ads to either anger people or make them stay home on election day, and a right-wing billonaire named Mercer.
And, where all of this seems to come together is in the corruption (and perhaps even the outcome) of the last presidential election.
The major newspapers have been covering this, and Rachel spent the first hour of her show tonight building a framework to try to put it all into context.
But ... this is a huge story, with many players, many tangents, and a few tons of implications for the state of fair elections any place in the world.
My feeling is that reasonable people can see through the fog. And the outline that appears is that of a corrupt 2016 presidential election, and an illegitimate occupant of the White House.
This is a story that will be unfolding this week, with many details to follow in the coming weeks and months. With the exepteption of Rachel, all other "news" shows have made this a secondary or tertiary story tonight, if they covered it at all.
Stay tuned. Pay attention to this story. It's an in depth explanation of the mechanics of how democracies are destroyed and people are enslaved.
Perhaps, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that Steve Bannon, and many others like him, understand that influencing political opinions means influencing social opinions. And it seems that this is part of the project undertaken by Cambridge Analytica.
One final thought. Last week, a video of Bannon was aired in which he stated that people should not be ashamed of their racism. He said they should wear it as a badge of honor.
Steve Bannon's candidate, Donald Trump, is now the President of the United States.

(15,027 posts)This is a complex, multi-layered operation.
It's conceivable that there were so may parallel plots going on that none of them knew about each other.
We'll never know how many organizations existed, how may plots were hatched, and which of them had any impact on the election.
But there is one thing we can be certain of. American right-wing fanatics will continue to subvert "American values" in pursuit of their goals. I'm not sure that many involved in their movement realize that the goal is American fascism and political and physical control of the entire population. Then again, when we're talking about Americans who are attracted to fascism, we're not talking about the best and the brightest.
In addition, these are people who are susceptible to being used to unknowingly serve the purposes of others. It's really not to far fetched to see that many were/are being used.
