America. It often seems many in the GOP don't care as long as they were ensured a piece of the action and it was profitable for them ... money and power. Just WTF is going on in congress. Many seemingly just don't give a damn.

(6,374 posts)I popped over to a far-right website a couple days ago after Putin won his "election" and most of the top comments were people saying how good it is for Russia to have a strong leader like him.

(1,216 posts)Russian economy is puny compared to China.
What is the last time you bought something made in Russia?
Then examine all your purchases and check how many were made in China.
We owe China Trillions.
We owe Russia nothing.
China owns mines, land, factories all over the world.
Russia owns nothing except may be a vodka factory in Crimea.

Right now, Japanese cars are made here and Sony's worldwide headquarters is actually in New Jersey. China is no doubt thinking of following Japan's lead and neither one wants to screw things up.
(Trade is a complex thing-- and it is unfortunate that we have a "businessman" in the White House who has no clue about it.)

(1,216 posts)liquidating all US bonds which will drive down US dollar,
which in turn will make imports more expensive.
Japan is a good ally, unlikely to do same thing.
However keep in mind, since we have perpetual deficits,
those bonds will require paying interest in perpetuity.

Curiously, they are also the ones who are maddest (at least initially) when Big Boss inevitably betrays them and they take it in the shorts. They don't learn anything, though, and come back for more of the same when another Big Boss sets himself up as the only one who can save them.

(58,785 posts)that bizarre position on their own? Long before cyber and Russia, invidious American archconservatives were working to move America's culture way to the right, serving fear and toxic partisanship up in a vast poisonous stew of lies to increasingly deluded conservatives.
And they've been doing the same to vulnerable minds on the left also. Many former capital-P Progressives and others have been seduced right over the edge into extremism on other forums where they are fed and wallow in toxic messages that aren't allowed here.
Now that the truth is out in the open, there's going to be less tolerance for those delusions, not immediately among those too far gone to give them up, but among friends, family, coworkers, employers, and also among media, which will be losing more advertisers. New laws will help.
This attempt to make America crazy enough to commit suicide has mostly hit bottom. From here on, our enemies are going to be increasingly on the ropes.
Itm, be kind to their victims.

(58,785 posts)traits strong enough to damage lives then. There's probably a significant overlap between those tending to imbalance before politics and the people who become unbalanced politically, unable to maintain some kind of perspective and ability/willingness to recognize conflicting truths.
We know that people drawn to rejection of mainstream thoughts through social media often get caught up and adopt increasingly extreme ideologies. And that goes for groups that devolve into increasing extremism. Left or right doesn't matter, they're a lot more like each other than others.
I believe a lot of us saw that happen back in 2015-2016. After JPR developed as a satellite of DU, drawing people frustrated by DU's rules against expressions of anti-Democratic hostility, some DUers who'd seemed sensible and connected joined and became increasingly rejecting and hostile in the JPR culture. The effect wasn't the same on all, though the level of hostility and acceptance of lies necessary to support it have remained high. But for others, visiting there is like a view way down the rabbit hole. Like touring the CDC, a safe distance that doesn't make you feel safe.
