It seemed out of place, especially given the long history of anglicizing native people's.

(14,917 posts)deeply ingrained in the culture that it is practically a staple of solemn occasions, Maori funerals, welcoming dignitaries, etc. The vast majority of contemporary Maoris who profess a religion identify as Christian.
