...he will put a happy, reasonable face on all of the same policies, all the same hatred, all the same bullshit.

Trump needs to be hung from the neck of the Republican party for as long as he can be until Democrats gain control of.....well, anything at this point.

Anyone who thinks that any Republican will be punished for the sins of Trump once he's out of office is delusional.

What we need to do is get the house and Senate back in November and neuter Trump as much as we can and let him sit there in his own political filth.

..and the minute Trump is gone everyone on the Republican side, and especially all the very serious people in the media will proclaim that the Trump era is over and everything is back to "normal" and "the adults" are back in charge.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic or not, but while a chunk of Republicans would be upset about it, a large chunk of them including many who couldn't bring themselves to vote for Trump (I know a lot of these, who didn't vote for Trump but didn't vote for Hillary either). And even the ones who were upset about it would just fall immediately in line and have no reservations about supporting Pence.
