Update on Anthony Borges-shot five times saving other students at Parkland

Anthony is the only student who remains hospitalized. He'd been put in a medically induced coma a week or so ago and returned to ICU. It is wrenching to me that this young man's heroism has never even been mentioned by the administration nor major Congressional members, (but of course he is Latino)

If you are marching Saturday, keep Anthony in your thoughts. His road to recovery, though not detailed here has been hellacious. Oh, and do check in to let us know you are marching https://www.democraticunderground.com/100210390917

The father of Anthony Borges, the Parkland student shot five times while helping others, said his heroic son is doing better every day.

Anthony's father, Royer Borges, said his 15-year-old son is "making progress." Anthony, an avid soccer player, was shot while blocking a door so others could avoid gunfire. snip--

"He’s able to eat something solid," Royer Borges said. "He’s in better condition. Every day, it's a little step and it gets to be a bigger step for us. It's like a goal every day."

People have raised $753,570 for his hospital bills. Here is his fundraiser page--3/4 million is nice, but it won't go all that far with all the care he is going to need going forward. Their fundraising goal is 1 million, but even that will not cover all the expenses he will face. (Because of where he was shot, I am thinking he might even need for his home to be remodeled for handicapped accessibility, and perhaps an in-home medical assistant for a while. Both legs were shot, left upper thigh bone shattered, and one bullet went through his back):

his life, and after this all fades from the front page and from general memory, the funding will probably dry up or nearly so. Therefore, they need to collect as much as they can up front and then invest it wisely and carefully, so it can earn income without being put at risk by market fluctuations.

In Canada this young hero and his family would not be paying one cent for his medical needs. We the people would be (gladly) shouldering the cost of caring for this hero. As it is, he and his family will probably be in dept for the rest of his life.

We already pay for all medical expenses, it's just that on top of those we also support a giant pyramid of executive mansions, lifestyles and bonuses.

If we cut out the parasites of the current 'wealth care' system, we could have a very nice health care system for all.

Things that make sense to socialize are things that affect every member of society but which individuals cannot do for themselves. See interstate highways, railways, national defense, etc.

outrageous how the daily, mainstream media largely ignores the wounded. I've read a few stories about the Las Vegas wounded here and there, but for the most part, you really have to look for them. Collateral damage.

Another good article: http://www.ibtimes.com/anthony-borges-florida-victim-who-was-shot-5-times-recovering-hospital-2655281
(snip)
“Anthony is a victim of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. During this unspeakable tragedy, Anthony was able to save about 20 other students as he attempted to close and lock the door to a classroom. He was shot multiple times (both legs were shot, left upper thigh bone shattered and one bullet went through his back). He has a long road of recovery ahead of him but he is alive and stable.
