Marjory Stoneman Douglas student and #NeverAgain activist David Hogg told Axios' Mike Allen on Friday that his high school is "like a prison" since the shooting last month, with increased security and safety measures.
Why it matters: What many Republicans have been advocating for is increased security in schools, including arming teachers. Hogg said that his concern with having more resource officers in the school is "racial disparity between the black and white students," and that the solution should instead be common-sense gun laws.
Hogg advocated for better mental health care in the U.S., urging for "a lot more mental health solutions, and taking down the stigma."
On his scuffle with InfoWars, Hogg said: "Power lies with advertisers to stop funding these hate-mongering people."
On law enforcement: "I know law enforcement are some of the hardest working individuals in this country...We need to realize that there are serious issues not only at the FBI and Broward County Sheriff, but with politicians too who are responsible for government agencies."
The biggest mistake the media made when covering the Parkland shooting, per Hogg, was: "Not giving black students a voice. My school is about 25% black, but the way we're covered doesn't reflect that."

(345 posts)Each successive message we get from the school and county keeps upping the amount of security at the school. Yesterday, with the addition of Fla Hwy Patrol officers, we're up to 10 armed officers on campus. Also, when the kids get back from Spring Break, they will be required to use clear backpacks only which the kids hate.
We were talking about this last night with my son, and what I want to know is the school receiving specific threats to make this necessary, because many of these changes are being implemented at MSD only. If clear backpacks is just a generalized safety precaution, why not do it at all campuses. What is going on behind the scenes that we are not being told? Its not that I don't trust the administration or superintendant, they have been very helpful, but we do want information on why so much of what is happening seems to be MSD specific.

(4,896 posts)It is highly unlikely another shooting would occur at MSD so soon, but copy cats and other deranged people would more likely target another school.

(14,953 posts)There's big bucks to be made in personnel and armaments (NRA, Mercer) by having a security detail outside and inside of every public place. Perhaps in some private places too!

(CNN) Eight Florida Highway Patrol troopers will report for duty Thursday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, to secure entry points to the school, the site of a mass shooting last month that left 17 people dead.
The deployment of the troopers came following Gov. Rick Scott's call Tuesday for extra security on the campus, after two students were charged earlier this week with bringing weapons to school and another was charged for making a threat on social media. Also likely playing a part in his announcement was the suspension of a Broward County Sheriff's Office deputy who was accused of "appearing to sleep on duty" in his patrol car while he was parked outside Stoneman Douglas this week.
The governor asked Broward officials to require that an armed law enforcement officer guard every school entrance and said the highway patrol could help until a permanent plan is enacted, according to a letter Scott wrote to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel and Superintendent Robert Runcie.
