According to research, which took a look at census data, Black boys in America are the least likely to make it out of poverty, but are also the fastest to slide into it, no matter the income bracket they grow up in.
Even children whose parents make the same amount of money, who grow up on the same block, they grow up to have dramatically different incomes in nearly every single neighborhood in the U.S., said Nathaniel Hendren, co-author of the Equality of Opportunity Projects latest study.
Even for Black sons whose families make roughly a million dollars a year, they are equally likely to be incarcerated as...the white son of a family that makes $40,000 a year, he explained.
Black girls, on the other hand, dont seem to fall into the same downward cycle when it comes to income as their male peers, and the difference could be due to higher rates of incarceration for Black men.

(22,308 posts)Which is too bad. This research was eye-opening to me. Economic action is only one part of the solution for a more just society.

I wonder what people think about those discrepancies and whether or not they agree with the conclusions reached by those quoted in the article (for people who read it).

(64,854 posts). . .but the headline and the snip don't seem to say the same thing.
The snip is talking about the odds of incarceration despite wealth, but the headline says "poverty" which is counterintuitive. How could wealth not reduce the chance of poverty?

(6,145 posts)It's that it isn't a guarantee that it won't happen. There is a significant percentage of black men from wealthy families who end up impoverished.
That's what the data says. You're right. Maybe the headline and snip don't match.
The article is powerful and depressing.

(53,743 posts)housing authorities, court dealings, you name it.
When you see successful African American males and other POC males you're looking at exceptionally driven, talented and intelligent men who have had to work much harder than others in having to learn how to work around the obstacles constantly thrown in their path because of who they are.
And I should acknowledge also that they learned to identify allies, as not everyone in the mainstream culture is an enemy.

(6,145 posts)So true. And nobody likes to talk about it.
"Economic and class solutions will solve the racism problem." Bullshit.
