He's the last grownup left. The only thing that's protecting him is the fact that the Senate would have to confirm his replacement, and considering the quality (or lack of it) of the people he's been appointing lately, even the Senate might balk. Now he's getting all his people from Fox News. Hannity for Defense Secretary! Don't laugh; he'd probably consider it.
