Do you think Republicans will push for the line item veto as Trump demanded?

Traditionally they have been big supporters of the concept - at least until Obama was president.

I think it was part of their Contract with America back in the day.

7. FEINGOLD, MCCAIN, RYAN INTRODUCE LINE-ITEM VETO BILL (2009)
Fri Mar 23, 2018, 03:16 PM
Mar 2018
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), and Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) are reintroducing legislation to create a line-item veto to target wasteful earmarks, improve congressional accountability, and deter lawmakers from inserting “Bridges to Nowhere” or other frivolous spending into future bills. The legislation would enable the president to single out egregious earmarks in bills that arrive on his desk for signature and send these specific items back to Congress for expedited votes on whether to rescind, or cancel, funding for these provisions.

Other than lip-service, there's not much Congress can do to overturn the ruling that it's unconstitutional. But what do I know... I'm allegedly delusional because I believed Roy Moore would lose the special election in Alabama.

The line-item veto was ruled unconstitutional by the SCOTUS in 1999.

I want to hear some principled defense of the Dems because Trump just slams them relentlessly, and I rarely hear any dissenting views.

The House-passed line-item veto bill, which has been endorsed by the White House, is on life support in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
...

But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who sets the Senate floor schedule, has previously voted against line-item veto legislation. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), meanwhile, supported the bill that Reid rejected in the 1990s. Reid’s office did not comment for this article.

McConnell is seeing his Power slip away, and that most likely is the reason for his response.

Every State that has a line Item Veto has or is experiencing issues up the wazoo.

He probably got that boneheaded idea from the geniuses at Fox who push that sort of partial information to rile up their equally misinformed viewers. It's clear that Trump was was venting his rage and had no prepared speech where staffers would have vetted the accuracy and informed him of the errors before he made a fool of himself.

It's actually better this way. Every one of these unearned errors mount up, and while Trump's ardent fans can pretend to dismiss them as separate incidents, the toll continues to add up. Trump is even a bigger idiot than they are, and no one to wear that T-shirt.

But it was not that long ago that the House passed legislation in favor of a line-item veto, with Paul Ryan himself helping to lead the charge (and with some prominent Democrats in support - though most opposed).
