General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTo the marchers tomorrow: This one's all yours and I wish you nothing but the VERY BEST.
You are young enough to literally be my grandchildren, and at least biologically, my great grandchildren. The world will soon be yours. I am so very heartened to see you out there. I've been to more marches than a lot of people. Collectively, I believe they've all mattered. To some degree.
But this one seems really different. It has gone zero to infinity in an amazingly short period of time. That happened because of YOU. You own this and you deserve to steer and guide it. If my generation can somehow help, just ask. We're here, watching and admiring.
There is always talk of the need for fresh views and younger actors. And almost always the older generation manages to insinuate itself and - well - fuck things up.
But the way this thing you started has taken hold WITHOUT us shows how very strong is your position.
As I said, If you need me, you need only ask. Meanwhile, I'll be here, watching admiringly, as you show the whole world the way.

(1,068 posts)That age is something to be proud of. You were around when we were fighting the Nazis, and the KKK. Today we are calling groups like this "good people". Well look, one day might be able to look at our country and say we did something that will go down in history.

(11,535 posts)...you should meet my friend Doug. A few months ago, Doug flew several hundred miles to confront the husband of his youngest daughter, who was beating her. (I know....legal recourse and all that. Doug is more hands-on than that.)
Anyway, he even offered the miscreant the first shot. After that...well, let's just say it didn't go so well for that guy.
Doug just turned 73. Not every 73-year old, granted....but still. A blow for us old guys was struck! Literally and figuratively.
Several, in fact.

(170,963 posts)I dare not call them children because they're not. They were robbed of that, but they're quickly turning a horrific negative into a positive.
I hope this weekend might inspire some pols to find their spines and do the right thing.
But thanks to everyone who will be representing tomorrow, young and old!

(67,697 posts)Well said. I can see my OP may be interpreted differently toward older people. That was not my intent at all.

(11,035 posts)The time for simply carping (or "thoughts and prayers" ) is long since passed. Find the nearest march and show up.

(6,916 posts)The biggest danger with this march is that the media wont cover it - like they failed to cover womens march 2018, and barely covered womens march 2017.
The second biggest danger is the president will tweet a distraction (about Hillary or sexist attack ona woman, is my guess) and the compliant media will cover that and not the march.

(11,035 posts)Sitting at home and watching television simply isn't good enough.
If you have to march in wheelchair, march in a wheelchair. If you're confined to bed or your mother's funeral is tomorrow, well then OK, you get a pass.
There have been enough children killed. It's time to march.

The kids are leading. We need to follow.

(464 posts)Wish I could join them, but have Grammy duty and have health flare ups. Some day she will march with them and support them when they run for office.

(11,035 posts)It's her life we're marching for. Besides, it would be a good civics lesson.

(1,068 posts)That can stop this crazy mess of shootings anywhere in this country. To be crazed enough to kill another human being. Where is that coming from?
The 2nd Amendment?
The NRA?
The radical splinter groups?

(90,202 posts)...by being there. If you feel uncomfortable marching, stand on the sidewalk and wave as they pass by. Go to the park at the end of the route and listen to the speeches. Check out the various card tables -- there will definitely be some for voter registration, and you can see who else is there and for what.
The thing that would be awful is if local dignitaries hogged the microphone and cameras -- some politicians make it a habit of making any event all about them. Well, not this time.
Wear your walking shoes. Go. Enjoy.

(90,202 posts)Up to a point you don't really need a parade permit if you all stay on the sidewalk, keep moving, and obey the traffic lights. There were a lot of us seasoned oldsters, including a fair number of women in pussycat hats. There were groups of parents wearing T-shirts proclaiming their children's various schools (you know, the kind you get at the PTA fundraiser). And the high schoolers, bless them.
It was beach town mellow. Some of the cars honking support were pickup trucks with surfboards in the back. Our signs spoke our feelings.
I'm used to crowds that chant and make noise -- I did a lot of protest work in my former town during the Bush-Cheney era -- but Ventura is different.
Anyway, let me know how your day went and what you decided to do!

(12,904 posts)I love these marchers; but, PLEASE folks, do not leave a big mess in our nations capital.
I traveled to DC in 2009 to watch my niece compete in a triathlon. Naturally, the same weekend, the friggin Tea Party showed up to protest Obamacare.
Those clodhoppers left giant piles of their hate signs all over the city! It was disgusting. There should be receptacles for debris, but you might have to look for them.
So please, be safe, and respect your surroundings. You are doing something wonderful, and I wish you tremendous success.
