(52,152 posts)due to our country's love of guns. My school bans book bags outright unless they are mesh or otherwise see through. This was pre parkland (it was a response to Columbine) but it has recently been enforced more vigorously.

(30,481 posts)Background checks, waiting periods, modification restrictions, etc. would all have to be a constitutional issue. For the most part, they are not. Restrictions like those are for the most part settled law.

(2,857 posts)It has been this way since Columbine. You cant even carry anything into college ballgames like a big purse.. only clear pouches. To complain now seems a bit spoiled to me

(491 posts)And you will see how any attempt to try to secure 100% security is pathetic. Truth of the matter is that unless we want to live in a bubble around each of us, we will never be truly assured of a long life.

(2,857 posts)At least clear backpacks help cut down the opportunity. Sweaters and such can always be searched.

(52,152 posts)He is required to go to school. It is amazing the extent to which we think kids should have to give up rights so we can avoid dealing with our issues.
sarah FAILIN
(2,857 posts)The schools make the rules if you plan on going to public school. What to wear, hair length, piercings or hair color is all determined by school rules. Our kids were also not allowed to bring drinks from home because some spoiled kids decided to start day drinking at school and filled their water bottles with vodka. If you don't like the rules you can always choose the home school option which is an option in every county.

(33,643 posts)purposes every day he goes to school, therefore, gun-nutters should stop complaining and reciprocate by allowing more regulations on their 'rights' afa firearms? Like, how about some give and take here?
I think knowing the entire context would be useful in this case ...

(2,857 posts)Another article someplace said school is like prison now so I take it as complaining. He is a kid. Mine were always complainers when new rules came down too. They grew out of it when they found bigger issues.

(58,785 posts)transcends all political orientations, true, as 20 minutes browsing any political forum proves.
But this particular eagerness to deny and violate the students' right to privacy smells of conservative idiocy in particular, as does using overreaction to fear to justify oppression. Although nonthinkers of all types often sign on foolishly to bad ideas, these are both big conservative signatures.
Btw, you are badly confused about the difference between oppressive authoritarian government and the progressive government safety net that serves the people -- what conservatives call the "nanny state;" and yes we do still have some conservatives in the Democratic Party, but I'm surprised that someone here would be not just using that term but not even understanding what it means.

(14,167 posts)At what point is enough enough? TSA is STILL a farce and security theater. I only fly when I have to travel internationally. I don't complain about the additional time, it feels like an invasion of my privacy to be "felt up" just to travel.
And it's this type of erosion of our freedoms that Mr. Hogg is pointing out. Today it's clear backpacks. Tomorrow what will it be? Do females not have the privacy to shield personal products they bring to school? What about medications?
I get the need for security. But there has a to be a balance and we should always question whether eroding our commonly accepted freedoms is truly necessary.

Which well regulated militia did the Parkland shooter belong to? The Las Vegas shooter? Any of the mass murderers?
Let's look at who's rights are being infringed upon.
We could of course look to the Fourth Amendment for some clarification. Personally, I'll back Mr. Hogg.

(208 posts)I hope this kid doesn't plan on going to law school. As stupid as the policy is, he's barking up the wrong
tree, grasping at straws, etc.
Perhaps a better argument might be to state the policy violates their right to privacy under the Due Process Clause
of the 14th Amendment, but good luck with that one too, especially where schools are concerned.
