Australia and Britain will be connected by a non-stop journey for the first time with the arrival in London on Sunday of a direct Qantas flight from Perth.
The QF9 flight, which takes off on Saturday evening from the capital of Western Australia, is expected to take around 17 hours and 20 minutes depending on winds and will mark a historic aviation feat by completing the 9,000-mile (14,500km) route without a break.
Qantas is using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for what will be the first direct commercial passenger flight between the two nations. And with more efficient aircraft giving longer ranges, some believe it is merely the precursor to the ultimate goal of a non-stop journey between London and Sydney, a further 4½ hours east.

(12,690 posts)I've been on a lot of 11-12 hour flights and that would be my limit. Most folks do not wear compression stockings and do not perform any of the recommended inflight exercises. The likelihood of experiencing a DVT increases with each hour spent in the seat. For some folks, the journey could also mean a trip to the emergency room.

Also I thought Auckland to Dubai(?) was longer.

(21,103 posts)Took a San Francisco to syndey direct flight once. We left at 11 pm and that took 13 hours. I would be crazed after 17 hours in a cramped seat in coach. NO thank you.

(146,281 posts)Three stops on a Pan Am flight in 1967. It took 16 hours, but I did get a chance to get off the plane twice during the trip. During that 16 hours, I came down with the flu, and had a fever of about 104 when we landed in Istanbul. I made it off the plane, through customs and into a cab that took me to a Hilton Hotel. I walked into the hotel bar and ordered a Coca Cola. It came in a huge glass with lemon slices in it. Best Coke I ever drank. Then, I took four Aspirins and went to bed. Next morning, I got on a Turkish Airlines plane and flew another three hours to the Black Sea coast and checked in at my base, and then with the medic there. Three days later, I finally felt better.
Welcome to Turkey, Airman!
