He is a classic narcissists. His "base" is just a collection of dupes to be manipulated. He doesn't care about them any more than he cares about you or me. He is the president of an imagined country of one.

But you are right about one thing. As a strategic matter, he and his enablers, sycophants, and henchmen have calculated that they cannot possibly win a majority to their side. They are too hated for that, too widely believed to be illegitimate. There only option is to run every single election as a base election, with all that that entails. Generally, that is not a winning strategy, not in free, fair, open elections with broad participation. So you've got to ensure that elections are not that. That takes a little skulduggery. But that's a small price to pay for the "right" to hold onto political power.
