This makes me smile https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/03/devin-nunes-fresno-bee/
The Bees editorial board wasnt buying it. Its piece titled Rep. Devin Nunes, Trumps Stooge, Attacks FBI opened with this no-holds-barred lead:
What, pray tell, does Rep. Devin Nunes think hes doing by waving around a secret memo attacking the FBI, the nations premier law enforcement agency? He certainly isnt representing his Central Valley constituents or Californians, who care much more about health care, jobs and, yes, protecting Dreamers than about the latest conspiracy theory. Instead, hes doing dirty work for House Republican leaders trying to protect President Donald Trump in the Russia investigation.
It was the first public rift between the Bees editorial board and the veteran Tulare County Republican. The Bees editorial page had stayed silent eight months earlier when Nunes made headlines with his midnight run to the White House, when he purportedly read classified documents and then held a solo press conference the next morning to repeat the Trump administrations claims that the Obama administration may have illegally spied on its transition team. The much-hyped Nunes memo, however, marked a turning point. This was not something we took lightly. It was very seriously thought out, says Gail Marshall, the Bees editorial page editor. We wanted to get his attention and the attention of the people on this direction hes going. And I think it succeeded in that.

(51,584 posts)Janz is going to have an uphill battle and tough fight since the people in his district are very conservative, know nothing about Russia and don't care, love Fux Ruse and their only concerns are water and immigrants. They live in rural farmland and want water in a drought state and cheap immigrant labor for their work since no one will work for them as cheaply as immigrants. Total hypocrites (hate immigrants until THEY need them to expand their own personal wealth).

(15,222 posts)I think this whole "managing the message", taking over concepts and terms as being something brand new has become rampant - perhaps much worse since the 1990's.
I'll never be ashamed of being a liberal, an intellectual (a stupid one), a tree hugger, a pansy, or anything else that says that I care.
My father-in-law served in WW-II and was a staunch conservative but couldn't stand the lying and cheating and stealing that went on during the previous repuglican administration. I'm not sure that he could ever vote for the critters we have today.

(31,261 posts)Janz seems like a perfect democrat for that district. I actually think Nunes has more of a problem than Janz. Fresno is also home to Fresno State University, my guess is that the extended community around the university leans more moderate to progressive. Plus, people living on farmland are far in between, that means their numbers can be countered by strong turnout in the Fresno area of the district. In summary, Janz has a real chance of winning the seat.

Nunes supporting town a few months ago. They did this when Nunes was blamed for being corrupt with Russian connections. All the people they spoke with no matter their age or gender (they were all white) said they didn't even want to talk with the "fake news". Janz is doing what Lamb did...he approached them in person on their local issues. He said that is the only way to sway people in this conservative district. Lamb won by a too thin margin so Janz and his supporters will have to pound the pavement and hit the phones up until election day. Janz is very realistic and has a good "feel" for the citizens and their concerns. We will see how it goes but it will take a lot of work...it will be worth it.

(36,412 posts)and it's basically agricultural country inhibited by assholes who are against everything except heavenly subsidized federal water.
Andrew Janz was never in the military.
Janz was raised in Visalia, California. After graduating from Redwood High School, he attended California State University, Stanislaus where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 2006. Three years later, he earned a masters degree in public administration from the same university. In 2012, he was graduated from Southwestern Law School with a law degree.
Janz clerked for a judge in Clark County, Nevada district court after completing law school. In 2014, he was hired by the Fresno County District Attorneys, where he serves as Deputy District Attorney

(31,261 posts)So, Fresno is not in the district? If Janz suits the district, he has a real chance of winning against Nunes if he focuses on local issues and solutions, this is why we must support democrats that can win in conservative districts.

(3,335 posts)My son and daughter-in-law live there and it has become very expensive to live there. I'm talking about new homes in the half million dollar range on teeny tiny lots. Also, the college there became a university and it has grown, exponentially. There is a new freeway east of the city and there's just development everywhere. There are shopping centers and malls everywhere. There are regular flights into their airport. My son and daughter-in-law are both in the medical field and there is a huge medical community consisting of new hospitals and doctor's offices, and medical buildings, and the area just continues to grow. I've been impressed with the development. I think the agricultural area is shrinking as I've noticed trees bulldozed over in what was once orchards. That area's allocation of water was cut years ago and they've been bitching about it every since, but they, as others, have had to adjust. The farmers were paying much less for their water than people in the rest of the state, and those other people balked at that since we in the north and the south were paying much more for our water than those in the Central Valley. The current trend is towards more urban and less agriculture.

(31,261 posts)Here in Florida, we seemed to have gained 1 million people in 2 1/2 years. California is growing fast too. Districts that were safe for republicans during the past no longer are. In the agricultural region, the US born children of undocumented immigrants are now reaching voting age, AS FULL FLEDGED US CITIZENS.

(260 posts)I want Devin Nunes out as much as anyone, and I'm really excited with the special election evidence from around the country that shows a Democratic wave (tsunami?) may be forming. However this TW (traitorous weasel) won in 2016 by over 35 percent (67.6 to 32.4), that's significantly in excess of the swing seen in recent special elections.
Let's hope the wave continues to build and washes another TW away...
He may not be running to represent me but I did send Mr. Janz a small donation, I know little to nothing about him except who his opponent is, and that was enough to want to help.
