http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/crime/accused-baby-killer-in-u-s-illegally"An MDC spokeswoman says Juan Galindo, 33, was sent back to Mexico in July after serving time in jail on drug charges, a spokeswoman for the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center said."
"Galindo goes by several names, including Oscar Valladez. Police say he raped and brutalized his baby girl Thursday morning, but it took hours before anyone called for help."
"Galindo told investigators he had doubled his usual daily dose of meth Wednesday night when he was looking after the baby."
I have grown very tired of this. EVERY civilized country in Western Europe has an actual functioning immigration process. Whatever you think of the issue, our system is in complete disarray.

(48,181 posts)Europe has a lot of illegal immigrants. Just ask those Italian neo-Fascists, or talk to the German neo-nazis.
Here:
The Interior Minister, Roberto Maroni, a leader of the rabble-rousing Northern League close allies of Silvio Berlusconi on the government benches has explained his next step in his assault on the "emergenza di sicurezza", the "security emergency": fingerprinting all Gypsies.
It was the only way, he told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday, for Italy to guarantee "to those who have the right to remain here, the possibility of living in decent conditions." For this purpose the Roma those with Italian nationality and those without, EU citizens and those from outside the Community will all have their fingerprints taken. And the rule will even apply to Gypsy children for reasons that to many of Mr Maroni's supporters must have sounded obvious: "to avoid phenomena," as he put it, "such as begging". The new measures, he said, were indispensable "in order to expel those who do not have the right to stay in Italy".

(30,884 posts)Here's an awful truth: This guy apparently has a pattern of criminal behavior. Criminals don't obey laws. No matter how restrictive our immigration laws are, no matter how vigorously they are enforced, criminals will still do what they want without regard to the laws.
Headlining that this piece of detritus is an illegal immigrant is meant to inflame xenophobes. It's a modern version of the old style headlines highlighting the criminal's skin color or ethnicity.

(22,165 posts)... was also an illegal immigrant. His heinous crime has nothing to do with his immigration status ... it has to do with the likelihood that he is a sociopath with a drug problem ... his immigration status is a distraction (that will be picked up by the knuckle draggers as an example of those evil illegal immigrants)

(8,556 posts)Explain to me how that's a smear?
Immigration status is relevant when talking about crime. The reasoning is simple and has already been pointed out in this thread. Stricter enforcement and tougher border security means and a reduction of the overall number of people coming here, including those who commit crimes.
Let's say:
X is the overall number of undocumented immigrants coming into the country yearly
Y is the percentage of them likely to engage in criminal behavior
XY = Z, which is the number of undocumented immigrants who enter the country and are likely to commit crimes.
Reduce X and you reduce Z.
If you don't feel that crime is a reason for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and a more secure border, then make that case.
treestar
(82,383 posts)So crime fighting does not include deporting illegal aliens - that's just deporting them because they are here illegally, not because they are more likely than anyone else to commit crimes.

(8,556 posts)For an inmate like this in prison, 'nature,' means him being beaten, extorted, raped, and maybe even killed because of the crime he committed.
Right in your profile it says you were banned for talking about your own experience with sexual assault. Now you are wishing that on somebody else? Because it's not uncommon for sexual predators in prison to take advantage of child molesters like this guy.
This is a heinous crime committed by a person who shouldn't have even been here since he had already been deported once. But I don't support violating human rights just because his crime was terrible.

(21,691 posts)While I have no pity for those who commit crimes like these, and hope his stay in prison is uncomfortable, I have no wish for any inmate to be raped in prison.
Prison rape doesn't just happen to inmates who "deserve it" for unspeakable crimes; it happens to any inmate who is smaller, weaker and unable to fight off an attack. Is rape really a fitting punishment for theft? Drug possession? Or those falsely convicted on bad evidence (and not always of rape; bad convictions happen for just about every crime)? Whether one believes prisons are for punishment and penance or for rehabilitation, rape has no part in either scheme.
I'm always surprised at those salivating at the thought of someone accused of a horrible rape (or any rape; they're all horrible) being raped in prison. While I understand the gut reaction to see bloody vengeance, who really wants more rape and more rapists? I do not, and I'd think that survivors of sexual assault and rape wouldn't, either. The prisons do a pretty terrible job of rehabilitation and counseling for the crimes inmates are incarcerated for; they do next to nothing for those who turn to rape in prison or their victims. And many of them will be released.

Like you said, rape victims are often the weaker inmates. Other risk factors include being gay, being unaffiliated with criminal/gang culture, and being a member of a less-represented and/or less-organized racial group. There's probably many more as well.
Rape isn't the only thing this guy has to worry about either. He will almost certainly be physically attacked and could very well be killed because of his crime.
