So now we know Trump tried to fire Mueller in December. Maggie Haberman says he tried to do it even more times than reported. And new reports today that Trump is looking at firing Rosenstein.
On top of that, McConnell and Paul Ryan are refusing to hold a vote to protect Mueller which means they will absolutely let Trump fire him.
This is terrifying. If Trump fires Rosenstein/Mueller and Republicans do nothing, we're officially a dictatorship. Trump and the GOP are completely immune from the law. Mueller may have a plan to release indictments, but he still can't do anything about Trump and Congress still won't lift a finger.
This is causing so much anxiety!

(5,210 posts)So try to relax a bit.
For starters: If anyone fires Mueller (or presumably Rosenstein), MoveOn.org is calling for immediate nation-wide protests
It would surely have to be litigated in court, ultimately to the Supereme Court. I don't know the details on this (who files, etc.) but I have a lot of faith in it.
A few Dems have said they could hire Mueller and have their own investigation -- but that couldn't happen until we have SOME control in Congress.
It would probably create an even bigger turnout and victory for Dems in November.
It could finish the Republican party off for a good long time if they just sit back and let it happen.
We'll get through this. May not be easy, but we will. We survived a civil war -- and this has been called a cold civil war -- and we'll survive this.

(415 posts)of cash going to Democrats at all levels, in all states and nationally.
That's because the Republican Senate and House will do absolutely nothing about the firings, and the moderates who have been fascism deniers all along will see the light with the collapse of the rule of law.
Even corporations that have been on the sidelines will be forced to weigh in, a la advertisers on Ingraham. I think large donor and corporate donations have been running better than 50/50 for Dems, and the firing of Mueller / Rosenstein would bring enormous boycott pressure on those continuing to donate to republicans. Donations will swing our way by an unfathomable 5 or 10 to 1 ratio, which might make the congressional republicans cave.
Regardless, awash is cash and with a nation fearful of fascist dictatorship, we net about 75 more seats in the house and a dozen in the senate, a filibuster proof majority. Where it goes from there depends on the grander strategy--are we better off impeaching the jerk, or simply neutering him until 2020? I'm in the latter camp...

The people in the department of justice and FBI are long term professionals. They are protecting the rule of law.
Trump, the turtle and Ryan are temporary players.

ecstatic
(32,681 posts)the idea of a democratic president firing his prosecutor. Yet, that's being normalized with every passing day. We need to fight like hell, just as the rethugs would if the situation were reversed. ALL activity needs to be completely shut down if trump fires Mueller. Nationwide strikes.

(2,848 posts)He's considered that he will be fired, and he and the office of special council have broadened the investigation to the point that just firing Rosenstein and Mueller won't get rid of it. Trump is testing our institutions to be sure, but the people working in those institutions are a lot smarter than him. And the more he lashes out at them the more he gives them a justifiable reason to push back.
