Coca-Cola has been accused of propping up one of Africa's most notorious dictators.
The multibillion dollar beverage company owns a concentrate-manufacturing plant in Swaziland, an impoverished kingdom ruled by Africa's last absolute monarch, Mswati III.
The king has travelled to Coca-Cola's headquarters in Atlanta in the US, much to the disgust of Swazi political activists who blame him for human rights abuses and looting the nation's wealth.
Mary Pais Da Silva, co-ordinator of the Swaziland Democracy Campaign, called for Coca-Cola to pull out of the country immediately.

(35,568 posts)I didn't know about Swaziland, so thank you for posting one more on Coke's long list of crimes.
I hate Coke for exploiting laborers, stealing community water and jeopardizing our health.
They murder people to keep the wages low and the profits high. In countries where workers are paid $100 a month and rich executives pocket multi-millions, you do the math. And then to keep the scam going full court press, they gamble our 401K money on forced exploitation of our brothers and sisters worldwide.
Dear Sisters & Brothers:
Strong labor unions are critical to improve wages, working conditions and human rights for all workers and for democracies to flourish. For workers in Colombia and Guatemala, a strong union can also mean the difference between life and death.
The Campaign to Stop Killer Coke originated to stop the gruesome cycle of violence against union leaders and organizers in Colombia in efforts to crush their union, SINALTRAINAL. Since then, violence, abuse and exploitation leveled against Coke workers and communities have been uncovered in other countries as well, notably China, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Mexico and Turkey.

Coca-Cola Hit with New Charges of Murder, Rape, Torture
Campaign to Stop Killer Coke, March 1, 2010
On February 25, 2010 a lawsuit was filed on behalf of eight plaintiffs in the Supreme Court of the State of New York against The Coca-Cola Co. and Coke processing and bottling plants in Guatemala. This case involves charges of murder, rape and torture. The plaintiffs include union leaders and family members. This case has been brought in New York State because plaintiffs and other victims of human rights abuses lack access to an independent and functioning legal system within Guatemala, a country with a corrupt judiciary which has been undermined by the intimidation and murder of witnesses, prosecutors, lawyers and judges.

"Coca-Cola's crimes against union leaders continues. This Guatemala case shows, tragically, that Coca-Cola's Workplace Rights Policy, and its other false claims to the public about respecting the rights of workers to join unions, are nothing more than a public relations campaign designed to deceive the public," said Terry Collingsworth, lead counsel in the case.
