3. Most pound/rescue dogs are total sweethearts. I've worked with the latter and known many from both.

The biggest problem that I've seen as common is a lot of them are hand shy, skittish, or far more subservient than dogs raised from puppies in the same family for their whole lives.

6. Unfortunately, most shelters are overcrowded and many euthanize after 24 hours to make space.

It's sad, but there are only so many homes. The only breed that consistently makes it into shelters is Rotwiellers (sp?) and they charge a higher adoption fee for those. The dogs aren't bad. The breed isn't bad. It's the owners who are at fault. Pets are family for life. Period.

Probably even more so. I dare say more cats wind up in shelters due to ignorant owners.

Psssst....Cats are cats. They are not dogs, ergo they don't behave like dogs, so stop treating them like little dogs. And, that "bad" behavior is due to some cat issue, possibly medical, not because they are "mad" at you , and somehow being vindictive.

Rant over.

7. My middle daughter is a cat person. She volunteered to take care of shelter cats.

A local independent pet store had a large pen for shelter cats and she would go in regularly to do maintenance and give them attention. They all hated it.

Unfortunately, the store eventually went out of business because of the big box competition. It was an awesome store and the only place I would go for pet supplies for a long time. There's a local family-owned hardware store in there now (the kind with drawers for screws and stuff instead of shrink-wrapped packages). That's my first stop (and usually only) for everything of that nature.
