He was refused use of a pizza coupon. Then his white friend tried...

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article210095814.html

Alexander said he handed the coupon to an employee of the Hunter Hill Road restaurant, and she went to consult an assistant manager.

"He looks at the card. He looks at me. He was like, 'So where did you get the card from?'" Alexander told WRAL on April 26. He said he got the coupon from his pastor. He wrote about his experience on Facebook and posted a photo of the coupon.

he coupon read: "Present this card at any participating Pizza Inn location." The coupon also had a signature written on a line that read "Presented by."

Alexander said the assistant manager told him the signature had to belong to the restaurant's manager or the district manager, and it did not.

Alexander said he left the restaurant after being told he could not use the coupon.

"To go through an interrogation just for a $7.99, $8.99 buffet?" Alexander told WRAL. "It just doesn't make sense that I had to go through that."

Hours later, Casey took the same coupon to the same restaurant.

white people who feel terrible when they read these things too.

And please remember that racists might be literally too dumb to get over themselves. I don't know if you have read any of the studies that link racism, (and conservatism) to low IQ but here is an article about them. (It was printed right after Ferguson)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Racism Just a Form of Stupidity?

I think that a lot of us are shying away from an obvious truth, that the kind of blatant racial prejudice we are witnessing in Ferguson, Missouri, has everything to do with stupidity.

I’m talking about low intelligence, lack of mental ability, cognitive rigidity. The Ferguson racists may be a lot of other things—hateful, insecure—but let’s not sugar-coat what most fair-minded thinkers believe in their hearts: A person of intelligence cannot embrace such authoritarian and racist views.

<snip>

A small cadre of psychological scientists have continued over the years to explore the controversial connection between low intelligence and prejudice, and at this point they have overcome most of the methodological barricades, allowing them to rigorously analyze and answer this important societal question. Two of these researchers—Kristof Dhont of Ghent University, Belgium, and Gordon Hodson of Brock University, in Canada—have been studying the idea and synthesizing the work of others, and they summarize the fruits of this ongoing project in a forthcoming issue of the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science. The short answer is yes—there is a clear, predictable and causal link between low intelligence and prejudice, including racism.

I hope this helps a little.

Try to point out someone is less intelligent and watch the fireworks begin. The political party that relies on voters being less informed defends their right to be dumb--but still make voting choices that require intelligence and discernment.

But don't be politically incorrect and call racists dumb.

One rainy day, we went shopping in the city I lived in. It was adjacent to Boston, and a wealthy place.

I was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, no makeup, looking super casual and not rich. She was wearing a suit and looked super professional and high class. She had just come from court, as she was an attorney.

We went into a shop that sold china and pottery. Not just any china and pottery -- back in 1990, 4 little cheese/dessert/salad plates were $185. How I coveted those plates! They were works of art.

We were the only 2 customers in the store. I was in the super expensive china section and no one paid attention to me. My friend was looking at pottery (cheaper, but not cheap). The manager followed her around the entire time we were there. I watched her do it. Manager was literally dogging her footsteps to make sure she didn't try to steal anything.

Then I spoke to the manager and pointed out her racism.

We left the store. My friend said, you didn't have to do that, it happens all the time. I was aghast. She told me stories and it really is death by a thousand cuts. She could go shopping without something like that happening.

We became friends because she was in my class of several hundred people. I had recently moved to Boston from Atlanta. I was having a hard time adjusting. I raced up to her and said, "May I sit next to you? I just moved here and you are the first Black person I've seen in Boston and I hate that." She laughed and we clicked right away.

Meanwhile, lots of people spoke to me about their racism confidentially. I was shocked. They thought since I was Southern (hard to hide the accent), I'd agree with them. Wrong!

The media has a lot to answer for regarding racism, among many serious issues in our country today.

A thousand little cuts and the only thing that matters is that you are not Lily White. That is heartbreaking. I've lived in the US since 1965, and things haven't changed, not nearly enough.

thumb off the signature and then it was too late for the assistant manager to cry "fairness".

I was looking to see if anyone had gone back to where the coupon originally came from to check if the sig was indeed valid.. and I suspect it was since he got it from his pastor.

said and you can even see him sitting down at a table with food on it. He said he was taking the food to go to give it to his roommate.

Or maybe they said he could use the coupon but he had to eat in and not just take the food out. I think that can be a rule sometimes with buffets. Still they lied when they said both were denied food.
