Stephen King loves Randi Rhodes.

He invited her to Bangor, and took her on a tour of his small private network of local radio stations. She came back excited to see radio as it used to be, before corporate conglomeration, when hard-working professionals put their hearts and souls into putting out good radio. Apparently all three stations are successful, garnering high ratings in their markets. She said it inspired her tremendously.

Randi spent time talking about everything under the sun with Stephen, who is a big fan of hers. He's a staunch progressive, very pro-labor, very involved. She said she had the best mini-vacation of her life, and returned feeling refreshed and committed to get back to doing real radio. She sounded excited, and thrilled to have a fan as cool as King.

These two figures are important to me. Randi's analytical skills are unique in the world; I'm addicted, couldn't live without her. She's brilliant, the queen of hard information, and a dedicated American liberal. Stephen's last book, '11/22/63', was one of his best, and continues his growth into becoming the great American Novelist of his time. For them to spend a weekend together, chatting about politics and the world, writing and relationships --

Oh, to have been the fly on the wall.

When I used to attend UCONN women's games in person, I was present when Maine came to plan UCONN in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. I think it was 1995, the year UCONN won its first championship. Stephen King's wife was a big supporter of Maine's women's basketball team and for this game, Stephen King accompanied his wife and cheered on the team from Maine. I think he used to attend all their home games during the season, but he didn't travel to their away games, except for this big tourney game. I gave him big credit for supporting women's basketball, even though he and I were supporting different teams.

She'd be happy, and Randi happy would be a useful person. I'm glad they are talking.
