(54,269 posts)That his post gained enough traction to be worthy of a Snopes fact check is a high honor indeed!
That MM's joke was plausible enough to warrant checking out in the first place is a serious indictment of how far we have descended.

(6,906 posts)I thought the post was great, even including an explanation of the satire thingy.
I guess some readers run out of brain cells before reading the whole thing and rushing to to inaccurately post it on Twitter.

What put it over the top for me is the accompanying rationale as stated by Paul Ryan.
Says a lot about the pathetic state of this country that such an idea sounds credible.

Now I've got to add: It sure is a sad commentary on the gullibility of some folks. It also points to the fact that 'Rump actually does things like this, why not Ryan? I used up everyone of my "you can't make up stuff like that" comments over a year ago.

(10,819 posts)one of the twitter feeds I read and thought . . . Uh oh. I don't have a twitter account so I couldn't respond. But it's an object lesson in how quickly posts get picked up, swarm and spread out, particularly if they sound like they might be true or correspond to our perceptions of what's going on.
I think most of us here realized this was satire and if we didn't MM cleared the question up in another post. But on twitter? These things are plucked as is and retweeted like wildfire.
That being said,
to Mineral Man for proving once again the power of words.

Kanye is right. Slavery was a choice. Whites chose not to be slaves, and thats why we werent slaves. Whites didnt want to be gassed during the Holocaust. Thats why we werent gassed. Apparently Jews felt differently.
If you dont want to be a slave, dont be a slave. Its not that hard.

I propose a government that makes counter-semitism central to all aims of the state. A government:
1) Of a People, for that people, free from jews
2) That cannot revoke the right to bear arms, such that this people can remain free from jews
3) that forbids all immigration except of biological kin, where no person of jewish origin may live, vacation, or traverse

(10,299 posts)I used to recall that Democratic Underground did bill itself as being a place for satire, as well as Democratic Party activism, news sharing, and discussion in general.
One gets to learn what is satire, what is actual news, and what is discussion over time here. Having Snopes rate one of MineralMan's satirical posts says a lot about our society today - that their radar for truth and fiction seems to be malfunctioning.

(53,061 posts)Purposely deceive? SAD
Here is a clue; When someone doesn't have any link and puts in a cartoon similie, probably satire.
If that didn't reveal it then the Republicans openly advocating increasing higher taxes for poor people should have gotten you over the line.
And if that didn't give you enough of a clue then a dozen people responding saying "great satire" was your cliff note explanation.
At no time did the author try to actually deceive anyone.
left-of-center2012
(34,195 posts)But, nice try.

(53,061 posts)And all of the obvious elements necessary to see that it was obviously satire were there.
Here is a clue; When someone doesn't have any link and puts in a cartoon similie, probably satire.
There were no links. OP had
If that didn't reveal it then the Republicans openly advocating increasing higher taxes for poor people should have gotten you over the line.
"Joel, my good friend, suggests that the road to a more prosperious (sic) America will come through even higher taxes on low-income citizens, who will benefit in the end"
You really thought that any thinking person would read this and think it was real. If the absurd exaggeration on tax policy and the poor wasn't enough the spelling should have confirmed it.
No one is applauding "fake news". Satire is one of the oldest forms of political discourse and criticism including many of our common nursery rhymes (humpty dumpty) and goes all the way back to Aristophanes.
We aren't giving it up because you can't tell the difference between obvious satire and propogation of a false news report.

(146,248 posts)I hadn't gone back and looked at the original post. I assume most of those came from clicks on the link in the Twitter post and its retweets. Also from Snopes. I don't remember ever seeing that many views of any DU post before.
I hope some of them sign up on DU and join in the conversation here. At least those who have progressive viewpoints.
What's interesting is that this particular satire post got picked up and went viral. I'm still trying to figure out why. I've written many such posts here, but most of them have only gotten attention from DUers. I've never seen one escape into the wild like this one did. Dumb luck, I expect it was.

However, a few days rest and a few gin and tonics, and I'll be back in the game again, I'm sure.
