Bug exposed Twitter passwords

By ERIC GELLER 05/03/2018 05:18 PM EDT

Twitter is urging its more than 330 million users to change their passwords, saying it had discovered a bug that unmasked login credentials within its internal systems.

The social media company says that its users' personal details weren't revealed to anyone outside the company and that there's no indication of a breach or any maleficence. Still, it has suggested that everyone using the site update their password.

"When you set a password for your Twitter account, we use technology that masks it so no one at the company can see it," the company said in a blog post. "We recently identified a bug that stored passwords unmasked in an internal log. We have fixed the bug, and our investigation shows no indication of breach or misuse by anyone."

Twitter said that it "found this error ourselves, removed the passwords, and are implementing plans to prevent this bug from happening again."
