Trump never directly repaid him. Instead Trump funneled $35K to him a month as a retainer and that money was used to pay off Stormy.

Why I don't buy this - I don't see Trump paying a monthly retainer to Cohen. He doesn't pay his bills. Why would he pay a retainer for unspecified not yet performed services?
