Remember travelgate? Ah, it seems so quaint now.

Travelgate was the first nothingburger witch hunt of the Bill Clinton presidency. It was also the start of a quarter-century smear campaign against Hillary, assuming you don't count the scandalous cookie bake-off during the campaign.

The Clintons fired seven staffers in the White House travel office and replaced them with people they knew.

Everyone agreed that these staffers serve at the pleasure of the president, but it was normal to keep such staffers in place, and the replacements were deemed "cronies".

Most of the fired people were rehired, albeit to different positions, and some of the "cronies" had to go due to media pressure.

There were several investigations but no charges, other than one of the fired travel office people for financial shenanigans, though he wasn't convicted.

All in all, a big nothingburger. Nevertheless, it started to create the negative impression of the clintons that the right wing has thrived on ever since.

Fast forward to the Donnie administration, and republicans are totally cool with him surrounding himself with cronies and family. Not just a few friends in the distant, low-profile travel office, but family as top advisors and cronies throughout the cabinet.

republicans are eagerly encouraging him to fire not mere staffers, but prosecutors who are investigating him, his family, and his cronies for serious felonies, including espionage, election law violations, borderline treasonous activities, money laundering, etc.

But republicans are standing by Donnie and insist there's nothing there.

Hillary would have been impeached if she even *hired* a lawyer, and republican are fine with ghouliani blabbing lies and contradictions and claims that Donnie didn't commit one crime because he was too busy committing a different crime.
