Whether I am a mongrel American whose ancestors we've traced come from Europe, a "white person", or what someone might call "wypipo" doesn't really make a bit of difference in my life.
If there's a negative connotation of "wypipo" that I'm engaging in, I'd like to know so I can change it. Part of privilege is not seeing what's in front of you because it wasn't necessary for you as a survival mechanism. Though that's my job to figure out, it's helpful when others show the way.
But as a person who is pale, this word has no effect on me.
A person can call me that, and it's not going to affect my ability to get an apartment or a mortgage. I've never even HEARD of it being spraypainted on someone's property.
It's not going to change how I have to walk through my day any more than "cracker", "honkey", or "ginger". It was never used to oppress me or my ancestors. Neither were the others.
And if you're suddenly feeling attacked by the existence of the word....

This discussion is simple, either non POC can learn why whining about this word is in and of itself privilege, or they wont learn that.

(4,407 posts)Is a wypipo a person who claims to be liberal and for equality, but moves into a gentrified area that has displaced the under-priviledged? Is a wypipo a person who decries the downfall of public education and sends their kid to private school? Is a wypipo someone who would like to boycott Starbucks after the arrest of two black people for nothing, but can't do without their caramel macchiato? Is a wypipo someone who thinks Black Lives Matter is too controversial for the Democratic Party to get tied into?
Discrimination and economic inequality is rampant. Maybe it is time us in the suburbs and "gentrified areas" do get a little uncomfortable.

(89 posts)I think the term is foolish and ineffectual. Its simply divisive and doesnt articulate a grievance effectively.
