A prominent House Republican plans to ask a federal financial watchdog to audit the office of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, opening a new front of GOP attack on the secretive probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to President Trumps campaign.
The pending request from Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), an outspoken Trump defender who chairs the conservative House Freedom Caucus as well as a House oversight subcommittee appears to be mainly calibrated to force the disclosure of a three-page Justice Department memo spelling out the authorized scope of Muellers investigation.

The 2017 scope memo has turned into a major flash point between the Justice Department and a cadre of House Republicans including Meadows and other members of the Freedom Caucus who say that Mueller has gone outside the bounds of his original charge to investigate possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.
We believe that the American people need to know what the scope of the investigation [is], Meadows said Thursday. Now some would say, Well, youre getting involved in an ongoing criminal investigation. Well, it is an investigation, but the scope of that investigation is not part of the investigation. It just says, were going to look at all of this. We believe because were funding it that we should be able to look at that scope.

A more fruitful effort could come in court: Meadowss remarks come a week after a federal judge in Virginia questioned whether fraud charges brought by the special counsels office against Manafort fell outside the authorized scope of the investigation.
While a Justice Department attorney, Michael Dreeben, told U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III that the parts of the memo relating to Manafort have been already been publicly revealed, Ellis asked Dreeben for an unredacted copy.

Comment: I suspect Judge Ellis may have requested an unredacted copy of the scope memo for nefarious reasons. To aid Trump and Meadows/Jordan. The memo the judge has the scope of the Manafort investigation unredacted already, he does not actually need the rest of the memo to make a ruling. Maybe I am paranoid.

Meanwhile, like during the Bush years, again, they are going to expose secret agents and probably some will die.
Vote these assholes out!

(44,115 posts)Apparently they want Mueller to stop before he gets to Trumps money laundering. Unfortunately for them I think Muellers team is many many steps ahead of them.

(70,186 posts)Repugs want to see the redacted material as far as I can tell.

(44,115 posts)They want to see the redacted parts to leak them to Trump.
I am glad Rosenstein said the Justice Department wont be extorted. I hope he can hold strong.

That doesn't quite make sense, does it?
Where do Republicans really stand when it comes to law and order?
Should laws only be enforced against people who are not Republicans?

(9,291 posts)need to understand who you really work for. Nunes and Meadows should be under investigation, they aren't just in it for Trump. I wonder if the FBI doesn't want to go there because they have to take out the head, but this tail of the Federal govt is noisy and people could get killed.
