Michael Bloomberg calls 'epidemic of dishonesty' bigger threat than terrorism

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/may/12/michael-bloomberg-epidemic-of-dishonesty-threat-democracy
<snip>
Americans are facing an “epidemic of dishonesty” in Washington that is more dangerous than terrorism or communism, according to former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In a commencement speech on Saturday at Rice University in Houston, the billionaire said “an endless barrage of lies” and a trend toward “alternate realities” in national politics pose a dire threat to US democracy.

The 76-year-old, who flirted with an independent presidential run in 2016, did not call out any politicians by name. Although he derided Donald Trump as “a con” and a “dangerous demagogue” before his election, in an interview before the speech at Rice Bloomberg refused to comment specifically on the president. Fact checkers have determined that Trump has made hundreds of false and misleading statements since entering the Oval Office.

presumably because he was afraid he would split the centrist vote and bring about the election of Trump.

I'm not a Michael Bloomberg fan, but he seems to have better judgement than some.

Before and since entering the White House, President Donald Trump has shown himself to be a remarkably prolific liar. There is no bogus detail too small, no claim too unbelievable, that Trump will not promote it in service of his preferred narrative.

From the size of his inaugural crowd to his knowledge of a pre-election payment to a porn star, the President has assembled a striking record of misleading statements and outright falsehoods. The Washington Post fact checker recently did the math and found that Trump lies, on average, more than six times a day -- 3,001 false or misleading claims through 466 days in his current job. (And that was before Giuliani started his cable news tour.)

when they describe what he has said or done as well as confronting his enablers at the moment a serious lie is said. Call them out to their faces every single time immediately. Some do it but not nearly enough or with consistency and adamantly. The Dems in Congress must do the same. NOW!
