Vice President Mike Pence delivered the commencement address to graduating students at a small, private, ultra-conservative Christian college in Michigan Saturday afternoon. Many consider the former Indiana governor a devout Catholic, and his speech certainly supported that perception.

Pence was raised in a Catholic family, served as an altar server, and attended parochial school.[4][307] He became a born-again Christian in college, while a member of a nondenominational Christian student group, and identified his first year and specifically "a Christian music festival in Asbury, Kentucky, in the spring of 1978"[308] referring to the Ichthus Music Festival at then Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky as the moment he made a "commitment to Christ."[4][307] After that point, Pence continued to attend Mass (where he met his wife) and was a Catholic youth minister.[307] Pence called himself Catholic in a 1994 news piece, although by 1995, he and his family had joined an evangelical megachurch, the Grace Evangelical Church.[4][307] In 2013, Pence said his family was "kind of looking for a church."[4] He has described himself as "a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order," and as "a born-again, evangelical Catholic."[4][307] Pence's designation as an "evangelical Catholic" means that he is an evangelical Protestant, who considers himself to be catholic in the sense that he identifies with the historic Christian Church, believing that the early ecumenical councils and the Protestant Reformation were both part of the progressive illumination of the Holy Spirit.[309]
When asked by Chris Matthews if he believes in evolution, Pence answered and repeated minutes later, "I believe with all my heart that God created the heavens and the earth, the seas and all that is in them. How he did that, I'll ask him about some day."[219][284] In a 2002 statement on the floor of the House of Representatives (reported in the Congressional Record), Pence told his colleagues "... I also believe that someday scientists will come to see that only the theory of intelligent design provides even a remotely rational explanation for the known universe."[310][311]

(32,079 posts)I am an agnostic. You can't prove the existence/non-existence of "God" or gods either way. But, when I see who is now in the highest political offices, I can't help but lean toward "There is no god." I AM sure that the god Pence worships does not exist, however.
Hamlette
(15,411 posts)and agnostic is the socially acceptable way to stay out of the discussion. My bet is you're an atheist like the rest of us.
An atheist believes there is no god. An agnostic doesn't know either way. If you have some proof that there is no god, i'd like to see it.
Hamlette
(15,411 posts)I don't say "there is no god" I say "I don't believe in god". No proof needed.
GoCubsGo
(32,079 posts)I prefer to have evidence. Like I said, I don't know either way, so I'm not the atheist you claim I am. I have no reason to believe either way.
Hamlette
(15,411 posts)I don't believe in God but I don't believe there are any agnostics either
I called myself an agnostic for 20 years or so. But then I realized I lived my life like an atheist and couldn't imagine any "proof" that would convince me to believe in God.

(32,079 posts)I honestly don''t care. If you want to argue with someone over agnosticism and atheism, I'm sure there are plenty of takers in the Religion forum. I am not interested. Good day.

(7,503 posts)I have studied them for over 60 years. Hypocrites is them. Many examples to back that claim. The most blatant being College President carrying on long long term affair with his assistant/daughter in law. When she became an inconvenient woman she was suicided. Long sordid story local police destroyed evidence to point Michigan state police said it was worthless. Law And Order did an episode loosely based on the story I believe it was Midvale College. Many Many stories that aren't told.

(4,651 posts)The Evangelicals supporting him have *completely* lost the moral high ground. Never again will they be able to credibly accuse their opposition of a lack of a moral compass. It's gotten so polarized that if Trump was discovered to have paid for an abortion involving one of his affairs the religious right would somehow find a reason to justify it...
