and she would've won the eleciton
Hillary Clinton was recently here in NZ to promote her book, and give a speech.
A radio Journo (sorry no link) got it right, she said Hillary Clinton would've won the
election, IF she had of said this to Trump during the town hall debate when he was
standing behind her.
All she had to do was to turn around , look at him and bluntly say,
"Back the Fuck off"
Trumpy wouldve been shocked and probably wouldve done so, thus losing all the support from
his sexist followers.

No doubt, Hillary could have turned the election and won it right then and there had she given that asshole a piece of her mind... it would have been the #1soundbite on every presidential debate highlight reel.

(37,156 posts)..."back off" still falls short. Prima Donnie needed to be mocked dismissively.
"Say Donnie, if you're going to stand behind me huffing and puffing, can you move a little closer? My jacket has a wrinkle that needs to be steamed out."

But, really, we shouldn't be dangerously underestimating the power of the huge and highly sophisticated right wing media machines.
Remember, they were set to medium-low power while Hillary was a senator from NY, just providing the media with material to make sure she was literally badmouthed every week in the national news. In spite of that, her approval ratings were very high. Lots of people liked and respected Hillary.
When she ran for president in 2006-7, the right wing swiftboating machines were set to overdrive to create dislike and distrust, and her ratings plummeted. Many said they disliked and didn't trust her.
When Hillary served as secretary of state, they were kept on medium, Benghazi, all that. BUT, in spite of that, her approval ratings went back up and remained generally very positive. Lots of people liked and respected Hillary.
When Hillary ran for president in 2016-17, the greatly expanded right wing swiftboating operations were run at full power 24/7/365, augmented by the Russian version and a series of harmful politicized actions by our FBI. Her ratings plummeted.
Same person, Brettdale. The same intense character assassination would have been brought against any candidate. Their techniques weren't developed for a black candidate, and Obama's candidacy flummoxed them because their usual ones backfired on them. Every lie sounded intensely racist and turned off instead of firing up too many Republican voters. They worked on a woman candidate, and her gender was weaponized against her as she headed for the big glass ceiling.
Btw, it wouldn't fix things if 60 million Americans said "back the fuck off," but it'd for sure surprise and dismay them. Then they'd redouble their operations.
Our fundamental problems are in
* the new political weaponry of the IT age,
* no laws controlling use of IT and other media to poison the national psyche,
* weaponized hyperpartisanship developed to turn voters on each other,
* voters excessively vulnerable to manipulation, many of whom now share and loyally promote a corruption that's spread from top down, and of course.
Add in,
* cyber warfare by a foreign state against our elections.
Oh, of course, and
* the new conservative billionaires here and abroad plotting and using our democratic elections against us to overset democracy and transfer our wealth and power to them.

(9,944 posts)...on that specific point. Maybe, without the vulgarity? She did consider it... I think she picked the best option, for the time and place. But, along your thinking, I've thought about another incident... what if she had "doubled-down" on the "Deplorables" comment? She might have said, "You're damn right they're deplorable!" The media never mentions them... we, as a society, tend to hide them; then, when they don KKK torches and chant "Jews will not replace us!" we're shocked about their existence. I think this group is diminishing - but they are always there and should have the light shined on them.

(47,267 posts)It would take little for republicans to jump all over Hillary, but there were times when she could have utilized "the look", something mothers and teachers have done for generations and boy-men like Trump tend to whither when it is used on them. Trump really has a problem with strong women, it wouldn't take much to unnerve him. He went into meltdown when Hillary called him a puppet for Putin.

(11,238 posts)Whether you realize it or not, whether you are serious or not, you are instructing Hillary that how she handled that situation was wrong. "All she had to do" was this one thing and she would've won!
Well, you're going to have to add that to all the other things other journalists have instructed her she should have done during the campaign, that would have saved us all from Donald Trump.
Oh, if only Hillary Clinton had had the marvelous 20-20 hindsight of her critics!

(56,828 posts)What would have happened is that the media would have said that he reaction proved that she is mentally unstable and not able to take the pressure of being president and that the demands of the presidential campaign have her on the verge of a breakdown.
Fox News would then have mental health experts on saying that Hillary needs psychiatric help, and the rest of the media would have followed suit and the big debate would have been "can she handle the pressure?" and "is she on the verge of a nervous breakdown?"
Then, there would have been calls for her to withdraw from the campaign and let either Kaine or Sanders run in her stead.

(7,808 posts)Like the old "most dangerous place to be is between Donald and a camera." If it had been me, I like to think that I would have asked him not to do that to the chair while I was talking.
It would have made him the joke for everyone to laugh at - his favorite thing.

She would have been vilified and persecuted by the right, the far left and media. Simply having her state some people's behavior was deplorable had her stretched out on the racks for a flogging. To suggest this easy solution is to ignore all women experience and especially all HRC experienced in the 2016 election.
Media totally ignored Trumps stalking as did most of the nation. They certainly were not going to cheer HRC calling it out.
